The World Aquatics Foundation presented the Republic of Azerbaijan with its Environmental Award during the opening ceremonies of the World Cup in Baku.
According to a World Aquatics release, the award was presented to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources “in recognition of Azerbaijan’s significant, long-term achievements in environmental protection under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev.”
The protection efforts include progress in sustainability and transition initiatives, environmental protection policies, and restoring several natural resources along the Caspian Sea.
“Congratulations to the Republic of Azerbaijan on receiving this award and its commitment to being a responsible steward of its precious water resources.” World Aquatics President Husain Al Musallam said in a World Aquatics release. “Azerbaijan’s leadership demonstrates the important role that governments and sporting communities can play in protecting our aquatic ecosystems for generations to come.”
Rashad Ismayilov accepted the award as the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
“We are deeply grateful to World Aquatics and the World Aquatics Foundation for recognizing Azerbaijan’s dedication to conservation and sustainable development,” Ismayilov said in the release from World Aquatics. “We will take this encouragement and continue to strengthen our efforts to protect our natural resources and preserve our water ecosystems for the future.”
Azerbaijan was one of the inaugural recipients of the award earlier this year, along with the city of Paris, which received it for cleaning up the Seine River for open-water competition for the 2024 Olympic Games.
The country is led by President Ilham Aliyev, who is widely considered an authoritarian dictator, making this another instance of World Aquatics awarding a known dictator.
Back in 2014, World Aquatics, then known as FINA, awarded Vladimir Putin the FINA Order, its highest honor, later justified by his support for hosting several major championships in Russia, including the World Championships in Kazan.
That decision to award Putin the award faced backlash, with the argument largely focused on the organization letting Putin buy international legitimacy, pulling attention away from the geopolitical aggression of the annexation of Crimea, a term known as “sportswashing”
