For decades on end, both Australia and the United States have been the benchmark for international swimming. Both nations have accounted for many of the greatest moments, races and swimmers the sport has ever seen, and the coming years present an opportunity to rekindle what is swimmings greatest rivalry.
With a new generation of superstars emerging on both sides of the Pacific, the battle between Australia and the USA is entering a new era, one that could shape the future of the sport and produce another chapter in one of swimming’s most iconic rivalries.
The individual head-to-heads and relay battles between both nations invoke a sense of thrill, anticipation and excitement, as the athletes and their ability/potential provide a reason for die-hard and casual swimming fans to invest in the athletes and the rivalries themselves. Examples of these scintillating battles include:
Kaylee McKeown vs Regan Smith Lani Pallister vs Katie Ledecky Sam Short vs Bobby Finke Cam McEvoy vs Caeleb Dressel Flynn Southam/Kyle Chalmers vs Jack Alexy Sam Williamson vs Van Mathias Mollie O’Callaghan vs Gretchen Walsh RelaysThe foundation of success for the two nations contrast one another, as the U.S. has unparalleled depth, meanwhile Australia score the majority of their Olympic and World Championship medals off the back of superstars at the top of their respective games. Stemming from the obvious fact that the U.S. has a substantially larger population, this advantage is reflected within competitive swimming, with USA Swimming recording more than 334,000 athlete members compared with Swimming Australia’s 66,000 registered members. A vastly larger athlete base provides the U.S. with a broader population to be able to conduct talent identification and development. Despite the differences in the swimming landscape, Australia and the US have shared similar levels of success, as Paris 2024 saw team USA total eight gold medals vs Australia totalling seven golds.
The swimming competition at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris created many headlines and comments which illuminated and illustrated the tension between the two nations, with Cate Campbell drawing attention from her comments which took aim at Team USA’s culture after the 2023 World Championships.
Michael Phelps responded directly in the lead up to Paris, stating how the comment would’ve fuelled him as a competitor, illustrating how intense the rivalry may get in the heat of competition along with the motivation both nations give each other. Throughout the Paris 2024 competition, the concept of iron sharpening iron was reflected in the pool, where both nations were consistently in the fight for gold medals across relays and individual events, which in turn created many close-fought and exciting races.
While the last few years have showcased the rivalry at its current peak, the previous two in particular have also provided an insight into the future, as an emerging group of elite talent have continued to develop into genuine superstars. A changing of the guard is most certainly underway, as developing talent during the Paris Olympic cycle have blossomed into the faces of swimming for their respective nations. The superstars set to represent the new generation of swimmers include:
USA
Gretchen Walsh Thomas Heilman Kate Douglass Jack Alexy Van Mathias Luka Mijatovic Rylee Erisman Audrey Derivaux Ilya Kharun Anna MoeschAustralia
Sam Short Lani Pallister Mollie O’Callaghan Flynn Southam Sienna Toohey Kai Taylor Harrison Turner Meg Harris Iona Anderson Ben ArmbrusterThese stars represent more than solely the future of their respective nations; they represent the next chapter of a rivalry that has shaped international swimming for decades. LA 2028 sets the stage for another chapter to be written in this historic rivalry, from creating iconic moments to establishing their own rivalry.
The Olympic Games are back on American soil for the first time since the 1996 Atlanta Games held over 30 years ago. A hungry and determined U.S. contingent are set to compete on home soil in front of 40,000+ people for nine days, providing an unparalleled atmosphere to what any swimmer has experienced before. For Australia, nothing would be better than showing up and showing out, then silencing the USA home crowd as a result of this. There will be nothing quite like the pressure of performing on home soil, with the American gold medals producing enough decibels to burst a few eardrums. Just like the Sydney 2000 Games, LA 2028 could be where the next chapter of the rivalry takes off. Sydney produced epic moments such as Michael Klim‘s ‘air guitar’ celebration in response to Gary Hall Jr claiming that his USA 4 x 100 relay team would “smash them [the Australians] like guitars.”
From Sydney 2000 to LA 2028, the Australia v. USA rivalry has continuously given swimming some of its greatest races, personalities and moments. What makes it so special doesn’t solely stem from the medals or the results, but the emotion, pride, competitive edge and mutual respect that comes with every race between the two nations. As a new generation of swimming stars take over, the stage is set for a new era of a rivalry headlined by friendship outside of the pool and contrasted by competitiveness in the heat of the moment. In just less than two years time, the world’s best individuals and nations stake their claims for swimming supremacy.
