Bears 24-Hour Rule: That Was The Most Fun Boring Win I Can Ever Remember ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Sometimes boring football can be a good thing. That was exactly the case for the Chicago Bears on Sunday in their 23-12 win over the New York Jets, which wasn’t as close as the score suggested. The Bears dominated the Jets in nearly every facet of the game. Offense. Defense. Special teams. Chicago got it all. And that, my friends, is thanks to Ben Johnson and his outstanding coaching staff.

Let’s recap the game 24 hours later.

Bears 24-Hour Rule

It’s hard for me not to start with the offensive line and the running game. The Bears’ big boys up front dominated in the trenches. Kyle Monangai ran for 146 yards and nearly five yards per carry. D’Andre Swift ran for 58 yards and nearly four yards per carry. Tyson Bagent was sacked just once. When the Bears needed to dominate possession in the fourth quarter, they did so at will. The Bears nearly tripled the Jets’ time of possession on Sunday (42:45-17:15). In the fourth quarter, New York had just one drive that lasted 45 seconds. Granted, it went for a touchdown. But that drive was sandwiched between an 11-play drive that ended in a field goal and an 18-play drive that ran out the clock. Just dominant. I mentioned him in the last bullet, but wow, I keep getting more and more impressed by Kyle Monangai. The guy runs so hard, but he’s gotten better at doing so with patience as he waits for holes to open. But once that hole opens, he’s at full speed, looking to run through someone’s face. I love D’Andre Swift too, and I think these guys complement each other well, but I’d like to see Monangai get more looks on the goal line going forward.

I thought Tyson Bagent was fine. Nothing more, nothing less. He’s a smart quarterback with some mobility in the pocket, and he knows where to look to get the football for the most part. That said, I think yesterday proved his arm strength just isn’t there for him to be a true number one in this league. And it showed on his interception. The ball was late coming out; he tried to make up for it and didn’t have the arm strength to get it where it needed to go. Is he a good backup you can win a few games with, though? Absolutely. And I’m glad he’s on this team with Caleb Williams missing a few weeks. That said, I wouldn’t mind if another team came calling and offered some decent draft capital. Mandatory Credit: Matt Marton – Imagn Images Let’s give a round of applause to the defense, please. Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen is doing a wonderful job with a unit that had very little expectation. They’re still taking the ball away. The defensive line is getting to the quarterback, especially Dayo Odeyingbo, who was the punchline of some offseason jokes. Allen has channeled his inner Dr. Chaos, and it’s working. He’s sending and disguising pressure, twisting linemen, and letting his fast defense play aggressively. This might not be the most talented defense, but they play fast, and they play hard. Allen is leaning into what this group does well, and it’s worked the last few weeks. In the title, I called this a boring game. And it really was in the very best possible way. This is the type of game that good, well-coached teams win. Especially when they’re shorthanded. The Bears dominated the ball; they ran it down their opponents’ throats, and while they never fully pulled away, the game always felt firmly in their control. It was like a boa constrictor. They had their prey wrapped up and slowly suffocated the life out of it until it was over. It was another example of Johnson’s ability to succeed with just about any offensive game plan he wants. Three different quarterbacks, four wins. Yes, the personnel around the quarterback has stepped up quite a bit too, but Ben Johnson’s fingerprints are all over the last two wins, and it’s been so fun to watch.

I want to give some credit to Rome Odunze. Last week I was pretty hard on him, since his end-zone drop on MNF was brutal. While it’s still completely unacceptable, it was great to see him bounce back with a really strong effort today. He didn’t drop the ball and made some really nice catches after taking big hits. This version of Rome is really good and makes a great tandem with Luther Burden III. We need to keep seeing it, and if we do, the Bears offense becomes that much more dangerous. Speaking of Luther Burden III, it was nice to see him and Colston Loveland back heavily involved in the game plan. I wasn’t worried about their slower starts, but for this offense to peak, they need to make big impacts, and they’ve done so for two consecutive weeks now. Mandatory Credit: Mike Dinovo-Imagn Images It’s usually not a great sign when your safety leads the team in tackles, as it means players are often getting to the second and third level, but this season has been a rare case where it’s OK. Dillon Thieneman led the Bears defense in tackles yet again this Sunday and continues to be an absolute menace for Dennis Allen (Dennis’ Menace? Maybe). With how well he’s playing, I’m getting really excited for the hopeful addition of a healthy Kyler Gordon and, down the line, getting Coby Bryant involved. If those three are on the field at the same time and healthy, this secondary can be scary good. Part of that too is Malik Muhammed’s continued emergence. He seems like a real find as a fourth-round pick, and he keeps improving as his responsibility grows. Devin Bush described Sunday’s game perfectly. It felt easy. That’s not meant to insult the Jets or sound cocky. It was just the truth. Yesterday’s win was pretty easy. And to pick up a relatively easy win, even with a backup quarterback, feels so incredibly new to me as a Bears fan. But that also seems to be the new norm under Ben Johnson. His teams will be well prepared. They’re going to play hard. They’ll punch you in the mouth. And if you’re not prepared as well, they’re going to beat you. That’s not to say they’ll never lose again. Of course they will. And at some points they’ll be outplayed. But for the first time in a long time, the Bears are that really good team that will be hard to beat. They are the team that keeps coming back at you. They’re the team that will come back to beat you if you give them life. They are the team that will put you down and not let you back up if you don’t come ready to play. And all of that is thanks to Ben Johnson and the culture he’s built, as well as the roster he and General Manager Ryan Poles have put together. I’m not guaranteeing they’ll go into Green Bay and beat the Packers next week. But at any point in the past, would you have ever felt comfortable going into Green Bay with a backup quarterback? Let alone believe the Bears should win? I know I haven’t. And it feels really, really cool to not only think this way and believe that, but to be justified in having that feeling. Because the Chicago Bears have one of the best coaches in the NFL, and that feels so incredibly awesome to say.
