Kevin Bacon is paying tribute to a singer he says was one of the finest vocalists in rock. In a statement to EW, the actor heaped praise on “Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer Bonnie Tyler, whose death was announced on Thursday (July 9).

After representatives for the 75-year-old Welsh pop star revealed that she had “unexpectedly passed away last night (July 8) in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” Bacon told EW that Tyler was “one of the great voices of rock.” The singer’s passing coincided with Bacon’s 68th birthday on Wednesday and the Footloose star added that Tyler’s indelible contribution to the 1984 Footloose soundtrack, the propulsive Billboard Hot 100 No. 34 hit “Holding Out For a Hero,” helped elevate one of that coming-of-age film’s most iconic scenes.

“I could not imagine chicken racing a tractor to any other song. RIP,” Bacon said.

Tyler’s death came after her emergency intestinal surgery in May in Faro in Southern Portugal, where she had a home. The singer born Gaynor Hopkins in Neath, Wales in 1951 was later placed in a medically induced coma and reportedly woke from that coma in June, though she remained in intensive care; at press time no additional information was available on her cause of death.

She reached global fame in 1983 with the dramatic ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which would become her signature song. Written and produced by frequent Meatloaf collaborator Jim Steinman, the song spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first, and to date only, Welsh-born singer to top that tally.

A number of other celebrities also paid tribute to the singer with the signature raspy voice, including Bryan Adams, who wrote on X, “Dear Bonnie Tyler passed today, she had such a great voice and I’ll always be grateful of her beautiful version of ‘Straight From The Heart.’ Thanks Bonnie. RIP,” in reference to her cover of his 1983 ballad; her 1986 album, Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire, featured “No Way to Treat a Lady,” a song co-written by Adams.

Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones also honored Tyler, who was married to her cousin and performed at the star’s wedding to Michael Douglas in 2000. “My heart is broken with the news that our dearest Bonnie Tyler has passed away. Bonnie was married to my cousin and has been such a part of my life. We are photographed here together the night before my wedding,” Zeta-Jones wrote on Instagram alongside a picture of the two together.

“She sang and rocked it at my wedding. An extraordinary woman with vocals to match,” Swansea, Wales-born Zeta-Jones added. “A one of kind artist, who so easily could have been a comedian because she was one of the funniest people I ever met. Thank you Bonnie for the joy you brought so many. Sleep tight beautiful lady. We shall forever ‘Keep A Welcome In The Hillsides’ of Wales for you.”
