Cricketers vs BBL: Players demand high salaries amid Cricket Australia’s privatisation plans ...Middle East

Cricket Australia’s (CA) plan for the privatisation of the Big Bash League (BBL) has hit a snag. The Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) is vehemently against CA’s proposal as it currently stands. The ACA believes players’ interests aren’t looked after and won’t agree to it until cricketers are paid more.

ACA rejects CA’s current proposal

Paul Marsh, CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of the ACA, has written to CA highlighting the concerns with the current proposal. For the unaware, on June 2, Cricket Victoria revealed their decision to sell the Melbourne Renegades and rebrand the Melbourne Stars.

The official name of the Stars will be just ‘Melbourne’, with Victoria working on a nickname for the franchise. The Stars’ home base, Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), would be handed to the rebranded franchise while the Renegades would be sold to a new owner. However, as per CA and BBL governing rules, the privatisation can’t proceed without player approval.

“Australian cricket is not currently united on the right path to privatisation. In particular, the recent upheaval around Cricket Victoria’s proposed sale of the Renegades and merger with the Stars reinforces our view that the game is not yet aligned on an approach that will deliver the appropriate value in the privatisation process,” Marsh wrote as per new.com.au.

BBL privatisation with no benefit to cricketers

Marsh argues that although CA and BBL are to profit from the sale of the Renegades, players aren’t to benefit. In the proposed plan, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) doesn’t show an increase in revenue share or salary for the cricketers. Until CA amends that, the ACA won’t provide the green signal.

Currently, all 8 franchises are granted AUD $3.1 million (approximately INR 20.75 crore) for the BBL draft. However, a player can’t earn more than $420,000 (INR 2.81 crore). Despite selling a franchise, Renegades and Stars players are losing out on a contract and earning more money; CA hasn’t increased the maximum draft or salary budget.

“CA’s current MOU proposal to us does not improve on the existing player revenue share arrangement, does not provide for salary increases for all player cohorts, and fails to address the broader priorities players presented to CA. Until CA’s offer improves, we cannot consider accepting what is in front of us,” he wrote further.

CA will hold a meeting on June 15 to discuss the privations with all current stakeholders. In the meantime, Marsh has urged the cricketers to persist with the ACA, as they look to find a solution.

“It is likely this will take some time, and we ask players to be patient as we do this. Given that any sale of these teams is forever, we need to get this right, now,” Marsh concluded.
