Look Who’s Getting First-Team Reps At Bears Training Camp ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

On the one hand, I don’t want to blow anything that comes out of Day 2 of Chicago Bears training camp out of proportion. But on the other hand, I’m not going to ignore that two rookies are already getting reps with the first-team offense. I just can’t do it.

Training camp practice observations from ESPN’s Courtney Cronin on Twitter/X mention that Bears rookie receiver Zavion Thomas was getting work all over the place, including with the first-team offense. Additionally, the Chicago Tribune’s Sean Hammond shares (via Twitter/X) from his notes that tight end Sam Roush “got a bunch of reps” with the first-team offense. It is fun to think about rookies getting time with the first-team offense.

There are two reasons I love seeing that a pair of rookies are getting looks with the first-team offense. Firstly, it gets everyone a chance to get familiar with each other. This might not seem like a big deal, but this isn’t an inconsequential development. At least, it won’t be when someone like Roush or Thomas gets thrust into the action. Players getting first-team reps in July and August means that it won’t be as much of a shock to the system when they are asked to perform in meaningful games in September, October, and beyond.

Secondly, I feel as if getting rookies early reps with the first-team offense is a sign of trust. Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson isn’t the type to just hand over first-team reps. Johnson giving the rookies first-team snaps should probably be seen as a reward for the work they have put in to get to that point. Here’s hoping everyone makes the most of their opportunities at camp.

I suppose there is a third point to be made here about first-team reps for tight end Sam Roush could be interpreted as a sign hinting at how much we will see 12 (1 RB, 2 WR, 2 TE) and 13 (1 RB, 1 WR, 3 TE) personnel packages in the year to come.

Post-Hype Sleeper Candidate Joins Bears Rookies Getting First-Team Reps at Training Camp

It is worth noting that Sam Roush and Zavion Thomas weren’t the only notable Bears getting first-team reps on offense.

More from CHGO’s Adam Jahns:

Interesting tidbit on the Bears' left tackle competition from today: Braxton Jones is the starter. But Jedrick Wills Jr. replaced him for the final snap with the starters before the second team fully took the field in team periods.

Even with Braxton Jones entrenched as the starting left tackle at the start of training camp, I fully expect Jedrick Wills Jr. to get some time with that first-team offense throughout the summer. Wills, a first-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2020, was an All-American at Alabama and a top-tier offensive line prospect in his draft class. Injuries have sidetracked his career and sidelined him for the better part of the last two seasons. Even with the injury woes, the Bears saw signing Wills as a worthwhile opportunity to roll the dice on a former first-round pick. It isn’t guaranteed to hit, but the juice could be worth the squeeze.

2026 CHICAGO BEARS — WHO’S ON THE OFFENSIVE LINE?

I’m all fired up about training camp being here. But it hits another level when I see news updates pointing out when certain players might unexpectedly get first-team reps. I look forward to seeing whether anyone takes the opportunity to carve out a bigger role for themselves in 2026. Stay tuned.
