After adding a second T20 World Cup trophy to the cabinet, the Indian cricket team will now shift their focus on the 2027 ODI World Cup. The Men in Blue had the golden chance to lift their 3rd trophy back in 2023, but narrowly lost out on it, having been outclassed by Australia in Ahmedabad in the final. Now, under a new leadership regime of Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir, India will attempt to lift the elusive trophy once again, with the side comprising of a perfect blend of experience and youth.
But the task isn’t easy for Gill. Despite being handed over the reins of the ODI team last year, the youngster is believed to have not wielded his powers in the dressing room as a leader yet. The presence of veterans like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli has and will make Gill’s life as captain easier. But at some point of time in the near future, Gill has to take charge of the dressing room in the ODI format, just like how he did in Tests.
‘Shubman Gill-Gautam Gambhir to take charge’
As per the Times of India, a BCCI source claimed that Gill needs to have a stronger say in the dressing room which comprises of several senior players. The source also pointed out that head coach Gautam Gambhir hasn’t been actively involved in planning when it comes to the 50-over format, unlike how he has done so for Tests and T20Is. Despite being prolific in ODIs since the 2023 World Cup, India suffered a setback right at the start of this year when they lost to New Zealand 1-2 at home. This defeat came despite India boasting of a full-strength side.
“With such big players in the team, Gill needs to have a stronger say in the dressing room. Gambhir hasn’t got involved in the planning as intently as he done in the other two formats. So far he has let things take its course,” the BCCI source told the publication.
Now, the challenge for India in 2027 will be quite different. The World Cup will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia – locations where majority of the Indian squad which is expected to be picked haven’t played much in. While the selectors and the team management have already shifted their focus to preparing for the marquee tournament, and readying their troops accordingly, a BCCI source feels that it is the right time for Gill and Gambhir to step up and assert their views in the dressing room.
“Now that the focus has shifted to the preparations for the ODI World Cup, one may expect Gambhir and Gill to take charge and firmly communicate their ideas in the dressing room. It is important to convey to the senior players, who have served India with distinction for so many years, what role the team expects them to play,” the source added.
It is very clear as to which senior players are being spoken about above. Apart from Rohit and Virat, the Indian ODI squad comprises of several experienced players – who are also leadership material – like KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya among others. While it will take a team effort to win the World Cup, Gill will also have to step up as captain and lead from the front. But he will also have to tread carefully as he cannot discard the opinions of the seniors as well.
