Charles Knoepp from Ann Arbor, Michigan, has announced his verbal commitment to the application process* at Yale University for 2027-28.

A junior at Pioneer High School, he swims year-round with Club Wolverine and specializes mainly in mid-distance and distance freestyle. In March, he won the 500 free (4:24.00) and placed 3rd in the 200 free (1:38.14), clocking PBs in both events (he went 1:37.41 in the 200 in prelims). He also had flying-start splits of 21.00/45.59 in the 50/100 free on Pioneer’s 200 medley and 400 free relays. Two weeks later, he competed at Four Corners Sectionals and dropped 5 seconds to land a lifetime-best 1:49.58 in the 200 fly.
At 2025 Winter Juniors East, Knoepp had massive drops of 3.3 seconds in the 500 free, just over 2 minutes in the 1650 free (he hadn’t swum it since 2023), and 11.8 seconds in the 400 IM. He has since improved his 500 time by another 4.2 seconds.
Last summer, Knoepp had improvements of 4.3 seconds in the 200 free, 8.9 in the 400 free, 4.4 in the 800, and 4.5 in the 400 IM. He wrapped up the season at Ocala Futures, where he swam PBs of 53.89/1:55.61/4:07.13/8:33.88 in free and 2:12.03 in the 200 fly.
Yale has fielded strong distance free lineups over the last several seasons, with All-American Ivy record-holder Noah Millard and All-Ivy honoree Arshak Hambardzumyan leading the Bulldogs’ efforts. Knoepp’s best times would already score at the Ivy League Men’s Championships in the ‘C’ finals of the 200 free, 500 free, and 400 IM, and the top 24 of the 1000 free and 1650 free.
Charles Knoepp will join swimmers Edward Zhang, Eje Kim, and Evan Pan-Wang, and diver Ollie Gullick, in the Bulldogs’ class of 2031.

The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.
