This is not Sutherland’s first run-in with the law. In 1989, Sutherland was arrested for a DUI and accused of having a loaded weapon on him. The weapon charge was dropped when he pleaded no contest to the DUI.
Four years later, Sutherland was arrested and ABC News reported at the time that he pleaded no contest in a deal with prosecutors. He was sentenced to 200-plus hours of community service. In 2004, Sutherland was arrested for driving under the influence and pleaded no contest. He received a five-year probation and court ordered substance abuse treatment, Reuters reported.
When Sutherland was arrested in 2007, he was still on probation. As a result of a violation of his plea deal, Sutherland served time.
“You ever get a brochure for a holiday and you get there and it’s not quite what you’re expecting?” he asked during a 2008 appearance on Late Night With David Letterman. “Jail is not that. It’s exactly as advertised. One of the gang members in one of the cells was making all his signs to me, which I certainly didn’t understand, and I went like that. He got a chuckle out of that.”
Sutherland explained that his first experience showering in jail felt like a “cliché,” adding, “[I was] very conscious and looking around. And I, actually, I dropped the soap. I remember looking down at the soap and looking around, and I went, ‘Soap is overrated.’”
