Chelsea have no idea if they are a serious club or not ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

We should start by congratulating Chelsea for two historic achievements. They have become the first Premier League club to have a manager leave on the first day of a new year. They have also completed a set: managers have now left within seven months of being crowned champions of England, Europe and the world. Chelsea gonna Chelsea and gonna keep on Chelseaing.

If this all feels hasty and weird, somehow both entirely unplanned and yet entirely predictable, see the last sentence above again. Chelsea have 10 games in the next 30 days in four competitions and the next is against Manchester City, so of course all hell would break loose now. Have you not been watching?

Enzo Maresca evidently played a role in this messy end – how much likely depends upon your own bias. Either he is the head coach who must have known the remit and promptly tried to change both, or the guy who – how to say this delicately – saw reported interest from Manchester City become mysteriously known several weeks after joining Jorge Mendes’ agency.

Or he is the fall guy of Clearlake Capital’s farcical commitment to a single ideal, forced to pick between a bench of relative newbies signed at outrageous cost. Take the final home defeat as the embodiment: was Maresca responsible for the collapse against Aston Villa, or were his opponents simply able to bring on proven excellence while the oldest used Chelsea substitute was aged 22?

The record will forever remain weird. Maresca made Chelsea champions of the world. He has also taken 65 points from his last 41 league games, at least 15 fewer than Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa. Again, each side has ammunition for their war of arguments. Now it doesn’t matter, not that it will stop the crossfire.

Chelsea now stand at a crossroads. Are they a football club intent upon winning a Premier League title, or one intent on growing and developing players at exorbitant cost? You may say that those two strategies are not mutually exclusive. I’m not so sure. Chelsea haven’t finished fewer than 15 points behind the Premier League champions in the nine years since they last won it.

Liam Rosenior is the BlueCo candidate, the natural pick for these people because he’s already in the system, has managed an ultra-young squad – including several Chelsea players – and has developed quickly as a head coach. But he’s also another gamble at a time when supporters are craving certainty and you can’t wholly avoid the implications of that noise.

But what is the alternative? Electing for a perceived winner, a “finisher” to use modern football parlance, and you risk either abandoning the model or at least accepting that it is flawed. And, as happened with Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino, these higher-profile managers tend to demand more control than you’re offering.

There is something distinctly comical about all this; that’s hardly a compliment. Under this regime, Chelsea have become an elite football club that cherrypicks its favourite ingredients from others and never quite manages to finish the recipe.

Domestically, they have become destined to peak in two years’ time on a constant loop. They wear a badge that proclaims them as champions of the world but even their own supporters can’t agree on how much that matters.

Still, there’s no time like the first day of the year to work out where you are going, how you will get there and who will drive the bus. Welcome to another instalment of the Chelsea chaos theory: Clearlake, muddy water. Proper Chelsea, that.
