1.) This just sucks for Yu Darvish and folks who like watching him pitch. He’d already been limited to just 31 games total over the last two years, so the fact that he’ll also now have to miss the entirety of his age-39 season is not good. You worry about his ability to come back at all.
2.) This is a blow for the Padres’ rotation, which is already potentially losing Dylan Cease and Michael King to free agency. They’ll get Joe Musgrove back, yes, but without Darvish, there are now even more questions about the pitching group on what is otherwise a pretty clear win-now roster.
I wonder if this makes the Padres push just a little bit harder to retain one of Cease or King.
As for Darvish, I hope the rehab goes as well as possible, and he’s able to return surprisingly effective at 40 years old. He’s signed through 2028 by the Padres, for what that’s worth.
