No. 20 Texas will take on visiting No. 9 Vanderbilt this weekend in a key SEC showdown. Heading into the matchup, head coach Steve Sarkisian provided an update on the status of quarterback Arch Manning.
Manning went into concussion protocol after getting injured on the first play of overtime during Texas’ 45-38 victory at Mississippi State. Sarkisian said Manning is still in concussion protocol prior to the game vs. the Commodores.
Manning has passed for 1,795 yards, 15 touchdowns and 6 interceptions along with a 57.6 QBR in his first season as Texas’ starting quarterback.
Graduate transfer Matthew Caldwell came in during overtime for Manning. Sarkisian is confident that Caldwell will hold it down if he has to turn to him as the starting quarterback.
“He’s a guy that has been in a variety of systems,” Sarkisian said. “He has athleticism, throws a really good ball. What I liked about him on his visit, probably the biggest thing was his demeanor. It didn’t seem too big for him here.”
Texas vs. Vanderbilt is set for a 12 p.m. ET kickoff from Austin. The game will be televised on ABC. Texas won last season’s meeting 27-24 vs. Vanderbilt in Nashville.
