Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Backstroke specialist Joshua Smith, a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, has committed to swim and study at the University of Wisconsin–Madison beginning in the 2026–2027 school year. He trains year-round with the Arkansas Dolphins and attends Central High School.

Smith confirmed the commitment in an email to SwimSwam, and provided the following quote:

“I am ecstatic to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison!!! Thank you so much to my dolphins coaches and teammates for helping me become the swimmer I am today, to parents and siblings for always supporting me, and thank you to the Wisconsin coaches, staff, and team for making me feel so at home in Madison!!! It’s good to be a Badger!”

Smith’s first major meet of this past short course season was the Winter Junior Championships — West, where he clocked 48.81 and 1:48.19 in the backstroke events. The 100 back was his first time under 49 seconds and placed him 18th overall, while his 200 back ranked him 32nd and out of the finals. He also produced 1:49.85 to touch 38th in the 200 IM, breaking the 1:50 barrier for the first time.

He time trialed 56.43 in the 100 breast, which completely obliterated his prior career best of 57.46.

Smith concluded his season in March at the Speedo Sectionals in Columbia, recording 47.97 and 1:44.47 to clip his best times in the backstrokes. Both of those times were posted in prelims, before adding time in the finals, where he finished 2nd and 4th in 48.16 and 1:44.72, respectively.

He grabbed a second silver medal in the 200 IM, clipping his best by 0.01 with a 1:49.84. He also posted 4:04.04 for 14th in the 400 IM after breaking 4 minutes for the first time in prelims with a 3:59.57. He also swam 57.57 in the morning heats of the 100 breast before being relegated to 20th at night with a time of 58.07.

In relay action, he helped the 200 free relay to 4th place with a 20.87 split, the 400 free relay to 10th with 48.10, the 800 free relay to 8th with 1:42.55, and the 400 medley relay to 5th with a 50.10 backstroke leg.

A Division I program in the Big Ten Conference, the Badger men placed sixth out of nine teams at the conference championships in February. They went on to finish 22nd at the NCAA Championships less than a month later.

Dr. Jack Brown now leads the Wisconsin program, having taken over in May after seven-year head coach Yuri Suguiyama departed to become USA Swimming’s National Team Director and Coach.

The conference meet scores ‘A,’ ‘B,’ and ‘C’ finals, and Smith’s personal bests in both backstroke events would have earned him spots in the ‘C’ finals last season. His 100 back time would have ranked 22nd after prelims, while his 200 back would have placed 19th. To score in the 200 IM, he’ll need to drop several seconds since it required a 1:45.89 to reach the ‘C’ final last season.

According to last season’s team depth chart, Smith’s 200 back time would have ranked fifth, while his 100 back and 200 IM lifetime bests would have placed seventh.

Smith joins Ashton Joswiak and Max Stewart in the Badgers’ 2030 recruiting class.
