Former ASU quarterback Brock Osweiler makes bold claim about Sam Leavitt ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt is already generating Heisman buzz and 2026 NFL Draft hype heading into the 2025 season after leading the Sun Devils to a Big 12 championship and a College Football Playoff appearance in his freshman season.

But former Arizona State quarterback and ESPN analyst Brock Osweiler is raising the bar even higher, saying he believes Leavitt can become the greatest Sun Devil quarterback of all time.

“I think he’s outstanding,” Osweiler told Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta on Wednesday. “I really do. This might be going out on a limb … I think he has a chance to go down as the best Sun Devil to ever play quarterback. I really do believe that. If you think about the fact that he’s only a sophomore and he has an opportunity for three more full seasons as the starter, think about what he can accomplish, [and] what he’s already accomplished.”

Leavitt is draft eligible after this upcoming season, at which time the ball will be in his court on whether to turn pro.

Osweiler pointed to two big reasons for why he believes Leavitt will be the real deal and holds the potential to turn into an Arizona State great.

“First and foremost, I think his confidence that he exudes, I really think it’s infectious throughout the entire team,” Osweiler said. “You can see that swagger and that chip on his shoulder he plays with, and I really think his teammates and the coaching staff feed off that in a positive way and it makes the entire team better. And that’s what the best quarterbacks do. They elevate their teammates and their team.

“And the other thing I see with Sam and why I say I think he could potentially go down as the best to ever wear that uniform is he gets better every single week. So what that says to me is obviously he’s willing to be coached and he takes coaching really well and he has a couple great coaches around him.”

That is extremely high praise coming from Osweiler considering Leavitt has only one year as a starter under his belt. Despite it being his freshman season, Leavitt had a good statistical year, throwing for 2,885 yards, 24 touchdowns and only six interceptions.

“Just from the beginning of the year to the end, I feel like my progress was night and day, and I don’t know if it was necessarily my knowledge of the game got so much greater,” Leavitt said at Big 12 Media Day. “I definitely grew a little bit, but it’s comfortability within playing the game.”

That growth was evident for Leavitt as he had some of his best performances toward the end of the season, notably in the Big 12 championship game against Iowa State where he threw for 219 yards and three touchdowns with no turnovers.

This season’s expectations will be much different for Leavitt and the Sun Devils compared to last year, when they were ranked dead last in the preseason Big 12 media poll.

Team expectations aren’t the only difference as Leavitt is now being seen as a potential Heisman candidate who will now be facing pressure to build on last season’s success.

Leavitt was even recently named Big 12 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

“Well, it could be very distracting,” Osweiler said.

“But in Sam’s case, I don’t think it is and he’s proven that. Think about all the noise around the football program last year … He was able to drown all that out and focus on what truly mattered and put together a special season. And then as the season went along, and the hype and the noise and the conversations in the media and locally got louder and louder and louder, he started playing his best football. So I think in a lot of ways, Sam probably uses that for fuel.”

Where does Leavitt compare with ASU quarterback greats?

Osweiler’s comments regarding Leavitt becoming the greatest ever are subject to how long Leavitt stays in Tempe and what he accomplishes next.

Let’s look at some of the other Sun Devil quarterback greats Leavitt will be looking to pass.

Andrew Walter

Walter is statistically the most accomplished quarterback in Arizona State football history. Walter holds the school record for most passing yards (10,617) and passing touchdowns (85). Leavitt, who threw for nearly 3,000 yards last season, would be on pace to break both of Walter’s records if he plays for the next three seasons, which appears highly unlikely.

Jake Plummer

Prior to Walter, Plummer was the Arizona State record holder for passing yards (8,827) and passing touchdowns (65) during his time at the school from 1993-96. Plummer is the only Sun Devil to finish in the top three in Heisman voting (1996) and nearly led the Sun Devils to the National Championship that same year before losing to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, 20-17.

Danny White

White led ASU to a 32-4 record from 1971-73 and three Fiesta Bowl wins. He is ninth in passing yards with 5,932 and fifth in passing touchdowns with 59.

“Sam gets three more years as the starting quarterback at ASU if he wants it,” Osweiler said. “And that’s special. Think about that. If he truly stays for the next three, he’s going to have a chance to push for, I don’t know, 12,000, 13,000, 14,000 career yards, maybe even more, 100-plus touchdowns.”
