Will Modglin led off the Americans on Wednesday with a 53.40 backstroke split. This was three hundredths off his finals time of 53.37, but still put the United States in the overall lead. After this leg, the world record seemed questionable, with the U.S. sitting more than a second off the 2024 pace.
Breakout breaststroker Van Mathias had an absolutely monster swim, splitting 57.30 to put the Americans back in world record contention and extend their lead over the field.
Mathias retired from the sport a few years ago, and returned to part-time training last summer while working a full-time job. Since his return to the sport, he has completely exploded and his time tonight is the 11th fastest 100 breaststroke split in history and makes him the 3rd fastest relay performer of all-time, behind Adam Peaty and Qin Haiyang.
On the fly leg, Gretchen Walsh narrowed the gap to the world record even further, swimming 54.99, which is the 2nd fastest fly split in history, only she has been faster, swimming 54.98 on the women’s medley relay at the 2025 World Championships.
Kate Douglass brought the team home in 51.01 on the freestyle, another insane split. This is the 4th fastest freestyle split in history, only behind Marrit Steenbergen‘s 50.87 from earlier this week and Cate Campbell‘s 50.93 from the 2019 Pan Pacs and 51.00 from the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
