Jett ultimately settled for silver, but his 1:43.96 stood out from a historical standpoint as it marked his first time under 1:44. He shaved a massive 0.74 seconds from the lifetime best he set at last summer’s U.S. Nationals to qualify for this meet.

Given how exclusive that barrier is, having two swimmers do it in the same race is an exceptionally rare occurrence. In fact, this is the first time since the supersuit era that a race has produced multiple sub-1:44 performances. The last instance came at the 2009 World Championships, when Paul Biedermann won in the world-record time of 1:42.00 ahead of Michael Phelps (1:43.22) and Danila Izotov (1:43.90).
Even more notably, Jett’s swim gives the United States something no other nation has ever had: two active swimmers under the 1:44 barrier in the men’s 200 free. There are just five current swimmers in club as of today, with Leon Marchand joining earlier this week with a 1:43.76 lead-off for France’s 4×200 free relay and David Popovici having been as fast as 1:42.97. South Korea’s Hwang Sunwoo also broke 1:44 last October, clocking a 1:43.92 to set an Asian record and become just the seventh man in history under the barrier.

In Singapore, Hobson was the lone American to break 1:45, splitting 1:43.45 on the relay’s second leg.
After tonight’s race, the U.S. now has at least two individual 200 freestylers capable of putting up an elite split. Furthermore, Carson Foster has been 1:43.9 off a flying start before, doing so at the 2024 World Championships. Aaron Shackell rounds out the projected quartet with a 1:45.19 flat-start time, giving the Americans a potential four-man lineup that adds up to 6:56.82. Shackell wasn’t far off that PB in tonight’s consolation final, posting a 1:45.63 to take the win in the B.
That projection would put the U.S. easily under the 6:58.55 world record set by Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Ricky Berens and Peter Vanderkaay at the 2008 Olympics. Of course, relay splits rarely translate perfectly from individual times, and the Americans will need all four legs to come together. However, if everyone is on, the Americans could have a legitimate shot at finally bringing that 16 year old world record down.
