Giefing was the fastest man this morning by four tenths of a second and one of just three swimmers to break 1:46. He hacked nearly a second off his previous best of 1:45.88, which he swam in the semi-finals at the European Junior Championships last month before placing 4th in the final in 1:46.16.
He becomes just the seventh junior swimmer in history to break 1:45.

In both his previous PB last month, his time in the final there in Munich, and his European Junior Championships-winning swim of 1:46.88 last year, he had a strong third 50 but he held his pace on the final 50 here far better than in any of those three swims.

We saw a relatively subdued prelims in this event, with Italian record holder Carlos D’Ambrosio sneaking through in 16th (1:47.16) and Greek record holder Dimitrios Markos missing out in 17th (1:47.22), despite both breaking 1:45 on the leadoff leg of the 4×200 free relay on day 1.
Sauveur Cristofini, the French 16-year-old, set a new French 17-year-olds record (end of year age) with a 1:45.93 to progress third into the semi-finals. He is less than two tenths of a second away from the junior all-time top ten.
He sliced 0.45 seconds off his previous best of 1:46.38, and was nearly a second faster than the 1:46.86 he swam to win the French Elite Championships in June. Cristofini split 1:45.28 on France’s silver medal-winning 4×200 free relay on day 1, so will be one to watch going through the later rounds.
