Italy clocked 3:15.59 in the first heat for 4th, but a much faster second heat proved to be their undoing. Seven of the ten nations in that heat, including relative minnows Norway, were faster.
Manuel Frigo led off for the Italians in 49.38, 1.30 seconds slower than his time in the heats of the individual 100 free on day 2. He was followed by national record holder Alessandro Miressi, whose split of 49.13 was only just faster than the 49.24 he swam individually, and more than a second and a half off his lifetime best of 47.45.
Lorenzo Ballarati then matched his flat start best to the hundredth with a 48.64, with a brutal 22.49/26.15 splitline as he tried to stem the bleeding. Leonardo Deplano was 48.44 on the anchor, their fastest leg, but a long finish saw them outtouched by both Germany (3:15.35) and Israel (3:15.45).
Only one of the swimmers from the relay final last summer swam this morning, with Manuel Frigo being more than two seconds off his anchor leg of 47.34, albeit moving to the leadoff. Both Carlos D’Ambrosio, who set a new best of 47.58 to finish 7th in the 100 free final last night, and Thomas Ceccon, who split 47.10, were left off.
Italy ended up 0.24 outside the top eight, with Germany the final team in. Six of the nations in the second heat made it through to tonight’s final, including a record-setting Croatia team.
They clocked 3:13.06 with all four swimmers between 47.97 and 48.50, solidifying the promise shown by four top-30 finishes in the individual event. Jere Hribar was 4th in the individual final in 47.42 but just 47.97 on the second leg here, so they have plenty of opportunity to improve having qualified second-fastest.
Norway (3:15.23) also set a national record to qualify for the final, while Lithuania were a surprising no-show. They had named a team of Danas Rapsys, Tajus Juska, Kristupas Trepocka, and individual finalist Tomas Navikonis, but did not compete. They would have been a likely finalist after placing 8th at the World Championships last year and finishing 5th in the 4×200 free relay on day 1.
Notable splits this morning included a 47.21 from NAB’s Vasilii Kukushkin, a 47.37 from Spanish record holder Luca Hoek Le Guenedal, and a 47.34 anchor from Serbia’s Nikolca Acin.
Luxembourg set a new national record of 3:17.32 to place 15th, with Ralph Daleiden Ciuferri setting a new lifetime best of 48.55 on the leadoff. Remi Fabiani, who split 48.37 on the second leg, owns the national record at 48.40 from the individual event two days ago, and set a Luxembourgish record of 24.73 in the 50 back earlier in the session to move through into the semi-finals.
