He is a former World junior champion and European junior champion in this event, claiming the title at both meets in 2023.
He is the reigning European short course silver medalist, posting a national record of 22.69 in Lublin in December. He is yet to win a senior long course medal though.
He was one of three swimmers under 24.40 this morning, joining Kliment Kolesnikov (24.12) and Pavel Samusenko (24.13) among the medal favorites. Knedla hacked more two seconds off his lifetime best in the 200 back earlier this week, clocking a time of 1:56.26 to miss the semi-finals in 11th.
His was not the only Czech record this morning either, as Barbara Seemanova sliced 0.07 seconds off her previous best in the 100 fly with a swim of 57.43 in the first heat. Coming in without a seed time, she won the heat by over Kim Busch of the Netherlands by nearly two seconds.
She will not be swimming in the semi-finals, however, despite qualifying fourth-fastest. She has the final of the women’s 200 freestyle tonight, in which she is the defending champion and top seed after a very smooth-looking 1:55.77 last night.
There was one other national record which went down in the heats of the men’s 50 back this morning, with European short course champion Ralf Tribuntsov, who dropped three tenths of a second off his Estonian 50 fly record in the semi-finals on day 1, setting his third 50 back national record of the season.
He cut 0.13 seconds from his previous best of 24.79 with a swim of 24.66 to move through in 12th. He has set national records of 24.86, 24.81, 24.79, and now 24.66 so far this season.
