Less than two weeks after becoming just the 5th woman to break 52 seconds in the 100 meter freestyle, American Kate Douglass has decided to skip the event at Pan Pacs this week.
With a potentially enormous schedule, it was going to be almost impossible for Douglass to swim every race in which she was a medal contender this week. The sprint freestyles were really late-coming, including a surprise 50 free World Record in June.
While her 51.93 in the 100 free in a Time Trial at US Nationals was done too late to update the entry lists for this meet, that does give her the fastest personal best of anyone in the field. Her status as favorite would be even bigger given that Simone Manuel‘s listed best time is from 2019, given that Torri Huske didn’t look great on day 1, and given that Australian Mollie O’Callaghan scratched from the meet with a back injury.
After her 51.0 split on the mixed medley relay on Wednesday, it seemed plausible if not probable that Douglass could have the World Record in her sights in the individual 100 free, but we’ll have to wait until at least a relay leadoff later in the meet to see.
Douglass will instead race a single individual event, the 100 breaststroke, on Thursday. She doesn’t have a relay event in the evening, barring an unexpected call-up to the 800 free relay.
Her University of Virginia training partner Claire Curzan will also sit out of the 100 free, with her focus on Thursday being the women’s 50 back. She is the 4th seed in that race.
Other Notable Day 2 Scratches:
American Michael Andrew has scratched out of the 100 breaststroke, where he was the #2 seed (as seeded with best times). He finished 4th in the 50 fly in 22.99 on Wednesday. Mary-Sophie Harvey will skip the 400 IM, which we learned about on Wednesday: she will focus only on relay duties at this meet after being off her best so far this summer. Canadian Finlay Knox and Americans Gabriel Jett and Luca Urlando will all skip the men’s 100 free in spite of none of them having another individual event on Thursday. Jett’s scratch comes after a massive breakthrough in the 200 free to go 1:43.96 on Wednesday. American Alex Walsh has scratched the 100 breaststroke to focus on the 400 IM, an event that she hasn’t swum much of recently but added to her schedule late.Swims to Watch in Day 2 Prelims
After taking a shot on the 200 free, a new event, over the 200 fly, where she’s the World Record holder, on Wednesday, Summer McIntosh will return to an old standard on Thursday: the 400 IM.
Seeded almost 8 seconds ahead of the field, and holding the World Record, McIntosh’s only real battle in that race is against the clock. We will also hopefully see her as a leg on Canada’s 800 free relay in the evening session…
…While her teammates Douglass and Curzan skipped the women’s 100 free, Gretchen Walsh will swim the race. Her best time of 52.75 came at US Nationals in a Time Trial and, given where she’s come in other events, does seem short of her potential in that race. The U.S. will also be looking for a bounceback from Torri Huske, who in 26.20 was almost nine-tenths shy of her best in the 50 fly on day 1…
…After getting sick with bronchitis at the Mare Nostrum series earlier this year, it’s been an up-and-down summer for American sprinter Jack Alexy. The men’s 100 free prelims will be his debut at this meet, and his main challenger is Brazil’s Gui Caribe, who has been hitting consistent 47s in long course this year after wrapping up his college season…
…After Van Mathias split 57.30 on the World Record breaking mixed 400 medley relay on Wednesday, his individual swims will come on Thursday. He leads a suddenly-revived American breaststroke group that includes Campbell McKean as the 3rd seed. Wedged in between them is Japanese teenager Shin Ohashi, who set the World Junior Record earlier this year in 58.67. He was good on the mixed medley as well, splitting 58.24…
…There are a lot of swimmers looking for redemption in the men’s 50 back for different reasons. That includes Isaac Cooper of Australia, who said he voluntarily stood down as a leader of the Australian team after skipping a session at the Commonwealth Games to go drinking, and who split with his coach Ash Delaney right before the Commonwealth Games. Americans Shaine Casas and Michael Andrew are also in need of improved performances after rough outings in the 50 fly on Wednesday…
