Enhanced Box Score: Brewers 9, Cubs 3 – July 29, 2025 ...Middle East

If you’re looking for a level-headed, clear-minded take on the Cubs’ second consecutive loss to the Brewers tonight, I’m sorry, but I don’t have it in me…

… Not on a night when three of the Cubs’ best defenders, including two of the best defenders in baseball (Pete Crow-Armstrong, Nico Hoerner, and then Matt Shaw), made errors.

… Not on a night when Andrew Freakin’ Vaughn (because of course) went 3-4 with a grand slam and 6 RBI.

… Not on a night when the top of the Cubs order completely disappeared.

… Not on a night when the plate appearances with runners in scoring position were dreadful and desperate and reminiscent of the 2019-2023 teams.

… Not on a night when the Cubs’ starting left fielder left the game after fouling a ball off his ankle.

… Not on a night when another Cubs starting pitcher allowed four earned runs without recording so much as a single out in the fifth.

… Not on a night like that in Milwaukee, with so much on the line, with the beating the Cubs took yesterday, and the sad news we all endured last night as a community.

It just stinks.

But look, I get it. The Cubs are still WELL within the playoff picture. And they could just as easily win tomorrow, go on a major shopping spree before Thursday’s trade deadline, win a bunch of games over the next two weeks, and then take the Brewers to the cleaners in their five-game set at Wrigley in mid-August. And maybe that’s exactly what will happen. But for tonight, I’m just not in the mood to envision it.

After all, losing games is one thing. But the Cubs basically choked these past two nights. Two games in a row with sloppy play and all the obvious holes exposed for Milwaukee to see. No real fight. No big back-and-forth competition. Just ugly losses at a crucial time following a mediocre stretch with a lot of individual things going wrong. Gotta be better. That’s it.

All right. That’s enough of that. Brett’s Blogathon starts bright and early tomorrow, and who knows what the deadline will bring us over the next 48 hours. Maybe we’ll feel a lot better when the Cubs return to Wrigley to face the Orioles this weekend.

Oh, I almost forgot (for obvious reasons): Nico Hoerner can have Ankin Law “Making it Personal” Player of the Game tonight, for his offensive performance: 3-4, HR. He’s up to a 107 wRC+ on the year, which is about as good as he’s ever been.
