2026 RUSSIAN SHORT COURSE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Friday, November 6th – Wednesday, November 11th Nevskaya Volna Water Sports Center, St. Petersburg, Russia SCM (25m) SwimSwam Preview Meet Central Day 1 Recap/Day 2 Recap Live ResultsThe 2026 Russian Short Course National Championships saw day three unfold from the Nevskaya Volna Water Sports Center in St. Petersburg, with several national record holders diving in for hardware.
Not only are national titles on the line, but swimmers will also be vying for slots on the country’s roster for this December’s Short Course World Championships. According to the Russian selection policy, swimmers need to meet or exceed the World Aquatics ‘A’ standard in their respective events in order to make the grade for Beijing next month.
We reported how on-fire 22-year-old Egor Kornev crushed a new lifetime best and Russian national record in the men’s 100m IM.
Kornev stopped the clock at a mighty result of 50.23 in this evening’s semi-final, clearing the 51-second barrier for the first time in his career.
And, just like that, Kornev now checks in as the #3 performer of all time in this event, with tomorrow night’s medal-contending event still yet to come.
Top 5 Men’s SCM 100 IM Performers All-Time
Caeleb Dressel (USA) – 49.28, 2020 Leon Marchand (FRA) – 49.92, 2024 Egor Kornev (RUS) – 50.23, 2026 Vlad Morozov (RUS) – 50.26, 2018 Shaine Casas (USA) – 50.28, 2025You can read more about his achievement here.
Besides Kornev’s outing, there were several additional impressive swims to highlight this evening’s competition.
Among them was Darya Trofimova‘s victory in the women’s 100m freestyle final.
The 21-year-old threw down a mark of 51.90, splitting 24.94/26.96 to take the gold in a Short Course World Championships-worthy result.
Joining her under the 53.02 qualification standard were Darya Klepikova and Alina Gaifutdinova, who cleaned up the minor medals. The former logged 52.19, while the latter registered 52.43 to complete the podium.
As for Trofimova, the athlete’s previous personal best in this event entering the competition rested at the 52.19 put on the books two years ago, so she hacked .29 off that former performance to now rank as Russia’s #2 performer all-time. Only national record holder Mariia Kameneva has been quicker, owning the Russian standard at the 51.79 she delivered in 2022.
The men’s edition of the 100m free saw Egor Proshin get it done for gold, turning in a result of 46.30.
That held off Ivan Girev, who touched in 46.49, as Roman Zhiakov rounded out the podium in 46.57.
The entire podium easily cleared the 46.89 World Aquatics ‘A’ cut needed for next month’s Short Course World Championships.
World Record holder Evgenia Chikunova proved too quick to catch in the women’s 100m breast, clocking a mark of 1:04.45 to beat her peers by over a second as she grabbed the gold.
Ralina Gilyazova was next to the wall in 1:05.54, with Maya Yakovlev bagging the bronze in 1:06.14.
Only Chikunova delivered a performance worthy of next month’s Short Course World Championshps, clearing the QT of 1:04.97.
The men’s edition of the 100m breast also saw SC Worlds qualifiers, as Ivan Kozhakin clocked 56.42 for gold, with Kirill Prigoda and Alexander Zhigalov under the QT with a time of 56.78, good enough for bronze.
Finally, the men’s 400m free saw the top three performers destroy the World Aquatics ‘A’ cut of 3:42.18.
Girgory Vekovishchev led the pack with a gold medal-worthy performance of 3:36.62, a mark just .05 outside the lifetime best of 3:36.57 he put on the books at this same time last year.
Saveliy Luzin snagged the silver this evening, registering a time of 3:37.65, the best time of his career by over a second.
The bronze medal went to Nikolay Kolesnikov, who touched in 3:40.16, the 2nd best time of his career behind the 3:39.47 he turned in as the bronze medalist at last year’s Russian SC Championships.
Additional Notes
Maria Osetrova earned the top seed out of the women’s 50m backstroke semi-finals, registering a time of 26.30. She wasn’t alone, however, as Alina Gaifutdinova scored the same clocking of 26.30 to share top seed honors for tomorrow night’s main event. The women will be chasing a World Aquatics ‘A’ standard of 26.54 tomorrow. The men’s 50m back saw Pavel Samusenko continue his impressive campaign, turning in a time of 22.71 as the top-seeded swimmer and only athlete to run a time under the 23-second barrier. Behind him was Evgeny Shilovsky, who touched in 23.14, followed very closely by Georgy Yakovlev, who hit 23.26. Egor Yakovlev and Olympic medalist Kliment Kolesnikov both handed off a time of 23.34 to put themselves in the mix for the podium during tomorrow night’s medal-contending race. Nothing too crazy transpired in the final of the men’s 200m fly race, as Egor Pavlov posted a time of 1:52.99 to earn the decisive victory in a result which dipped under the 1:53.19 SC Worlds QT. Alexander Kudashev was next to touch in 1:54.37 as German Zazhirskiy rounded out the podium in 1:54.85. Alexandra Vermenich fell just .01 shy of making the grade for Beijing in the women’s 200m fly. The 18-year-old produced an outing of 2:08.86, a result which narrowly missed the Beijing QTT of 2:08.85. Darya Rogozhinova nabbed runner-up status in 2:09.49, with Sofia Stoyan nabbing 2:10.00 as the bronze medalist. The women’s 100m IM semi-finals saw Ralina Gilyazova put up the sole time of the field under the 1:00 threshold.
