Mercedes’ ninth crown brings Wolff into elite company

Mercedes has reclaimed the Formula 1 Constructors' Championship, ending a four-year wait to return to the summit, while team boss Toto Wolff reached a milestone he once considered beyond his wildest expectations.

The Brackley outfit secured its ninth constructors' crown despite an uncharacteristically difficult afternoon at Interlagos, where George Russell and Kimi Antonelli could manage only fourth and fifth behind race winner Lando Norris, Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar.

But the absence of a podium celebration was hardly going to spoil the party. With three rounds remaining, Mercedes had accumulated an unassailable advantage over Ferrari, bringing an emphatic conclusion to a campaign that has restored the Silver Arrows to the front of the championship.

For Wolff, the achievement carried an additional, deeply personal significance: he had drawn level with the legendary Sir Frank Williams on nine Constructors' Championships, placing him joint third on the sport's all-time list of team principals.

A milestone Wolff never imagined reaching

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after the title was confirmed, the Austrian was quick to acknowledge the extraordinary figure with whom he now shares that distinction.

"Obviously, Frank is such an unbelievable icon of the sport, and to be tied on constructors' championships, I never thought that was ever possible," he said.

"I had a close relationship with Frank, and to be there, it's amazing. I can't believe it.

"But also, fair justice. There are some of our people who have won more than mine, who were with Brawn, winning it with Honda, God knows what, and they have more. So yeah, I take it. It's great."

Wolff's reference to the Brawn era was a nod to the personnel who helped deliver the remarkable 2009 championship before the outfit was transformed into Mercedes.

Several members of that successful organisation subsequently became part of the foundations of the Silver Arrows' dominant era.

The latest triumph also represents a particularly satisfying achievement for Wolff, whose team enjoyed an unprecedented run of eight consecutive Constructors' Championships between 2014 and 2021 before losing its grip on the sport's biggest prize.

The long road back to the top

Mercedes' return to championship glory has not been straightforward. The introduction of new regulations in 2022 brought an abrupt end to its supremacy, leaving the team struggling to extract consistent performance from its machinery while rivals moved ahead.

There were encouraging signs this season, however, and a powerful opening stretch ultimately provided the platform for the title, even as recent races exposed some lingering weaknesses.

" It's amazing," Wolff said, reflecting on the campaign.

"It was a very strong beginning of the season, and that got us over the line. These last few races, there have been some challenging times.

"Today, it was difficult, but overall, I'm so proud of the organisation.

"We've taken a few years to be back in the top spot. Not many teams have been able to come back from such a situation, and it just shows the great work, the great people that we have in our organisation, and it's fantastic to be among them."

Sunday's race provided a rather chaotic backdrop to the celebrations. Russell, starting seventh after a five-place grid penalty, spun at the pit-lane exit during the transition from wet to dry conditions.

Antonelli endured two spins of his own, including a costly excursion at Turn 1 while leading, as he struggled to bring his tyres up to temperature.

Neither driver managed to reach the podium, but their combined points were enough to settle the championship regardless.

For Wolff, the significance extended well beyond a trophy or another entry in the record books. After several difficult seasons spent rebuilding Mercedes' competitive foundations, the Austrian could finally celebrate a return to the position his organisation had occupied for so long.

And in drawing level with Williams, he had also joined some very distinguished company.
