Sao Paulo GP: Norris masterful as Mercedes seals championship

Lando Norris kept his nerve through a treacherous, rain-hit Sao Paulo Grand Prix to claim his third victory of the 2026 season, finishing well ahead of a resurgent Max Verstappen as Mercedes wrapped up the Constructors' Championship.

In a race that swung between wet and dry conditions before the heavens opened again in the closing stages, Norris recovered the lead after Kimi Antonelli's dramatic spin and then resisted everything Verstappen could throw at him.

The Red Bull driver produced another remarkable recovery from the back of the grid but ultimately had to settle for second, 14 seconds behind the McLaren.

Isack Hadjar completed the podium in third, while George Russell and Antonelli finished fourth and fifth respectively, enough to secure Mercedes its eighth constructors' crown and its first since 2021.

Antonelli strikes first as Hamilton charges forward

Starting from pole, Norris initially lost the advantage when Antonelli swept past him into Turn 1 at the start, with Liam Lawson following the Mercedes driver through into second.

Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, both starting towards the back following engine penalties, immediately began working their way through the field. Hamilton made particularly impressive early progress, climbing ten positions, while Verstappen was already up to 13th.

The Ferrari driver's advance soon stalled, however, as worn rear tyres left him vulnerable. Verstappen found a way past, but Hamilton subsequently lost another position to Fernando Alonso.

With the track drying, Hamilton became the first to gamble on slick tyres, pitting on lap 15. His immediate pace prompted a wave of stops across the field, with Antonelli and Verstappen staying out one lap longer than their principal rivals.

The resulting shuffle left Antonelli ahead of Norris, Hadjar and Verstappen, while Lawson had slipped down the order. Russell also suffered an expensive moment, spinning at the pit exit and dropping behind Oscar Piastri and Nico Hulkenberg, although he escaped without damage.

    Antonelli's misfortune opens the door

Norris began closing on Antonelli, who was increasingly troubled by a suspension problem that caused his Mercedes to pull to one side.

The issue eventually proved decisive. Under pressure, the Italian spun at Turn 1, surrendering the lead to Norris but managing to rejoin the race. His handling difficulties continued, allowing Hadjar and Verstappen to sweep past and into the podium positions. Hadjar subsequently waved his Red Bull team-mate through on lap 38.

Verstappen, meanwhile, was mounting another extraordinary recovery. Having started from the rear, the reigning world champion had climbed into second just beyond halfway, although Norris still enjoyed a nine-second advantage.

Red Bull brought Verstappen in for fresh soft tyres on lap 46, while Hadjar initially remained committed to a one-stop strategy.

Rain returns to turn the race upside down

A light drizzle with 23 laps remaining prompted McLaren to bring Norris in for another set of softs. Hadjar abandoned his original strategy and followed suit on lap 51, leaving Antonelli temporarily in front as Mercedes gambled on heavier rain or a safety car.

That gamble failed to materialise. With Antonelli losing more than a second per lap, Mercedes finally called him in on lap 54 for fresh slicks, restoring the expected order at the front.

Norris continued to match Verstappen's pace, maintaining a seven-second cushion over the Red Bull, with Hadjar a further eight seconds behind.

Then the weather intervened once more. The rain intensified on lap 62, triggering a mass switch to intermediate tyres over the following two laps. Norris and Verstappen both pitted on lap 63, while Hamilton had a narrow escape after spinning on his slicks just before making his own stop.

With conditions deteriorating rapidly, the final stint became a test of composure. Norris passed it with flying colours, controlling the McLaren through the slippery closing laps to secure a hard-earned victory.

    Mercedes celebrates as Ferrari struggles

Verstappen crossed the line 14 seconds behind, with Hadjar another nine seconds adrift in third.

Russell took fourth ahead of Antonelli, the pair overcoming late balance difficulties to deliver Mercedes the constructors' championship. It was a significant milestone for the Brackley outfit, which had not lifted the trophy since 2021.

Piastri finished sixth for McLaren, ahead of Charles Leclerc, while Lawson secured eighth after a determined drive, although he could not prevent the Ferrari from passing him in the closing laps.

Hamilton's impressive opening charge ultimately yielded ninth, with Hulkenberg completing the points in tenth despite a ten-second penalty for gaining an advantage after leaving the track.

At the back, Rafael Camara finished 20th and last on his home debut as Esteban Ocon's replacement. Lance Stroll recorded his 14th retirement of the season for Aston Martin, while Valtteri Bottas never made it to the starting grid after a cross-threaded right-rear wheel nut forced Cadillac to withdraw his car.
