Henry Winkler Reveals Why He Turned Down a Fonzie-Themed ‘Happy Days’ Spinoff

Henry Winkler was one of the biggest television stars of the 1970s thanks to the popularity of Fonzie, the character he played on Happy Days. While the ABC sitcom featured an ensemble cast that included Ron Howard, Tom Bosley, Marion Ross, Erin Moran, Anson Williams, Donny Most and more, by the third season Fonzie was the breakout character.

The character was so popular that producers considered changing the name of the series to Fonzie’s Happy Days. But Winkler had a major problem with that idea—and he also shot down a proposed spinoff that would focus on his leather-jacketed character in new surroundings.

During a November 2026 appearance at Rhode Island Comic Con, Winkler, 81, explained why he was so against adding Fonzie’s name to the front of the show’s title after his character “began to take off.””

“The president of ABC came to me and said, ‘We want to call the show Fonzie’s Happy Days,” Winkler recalled, per People magazine. “I said, ‘Don’t fix something that isn’t broken. It would be a tremendous insult to the people that I work with, that I live with, that I’m thriving with, if all of a sudden you take [that name],'” he further explained.

Winkler also had no interest in seeing Fonzie with new sidekicks.

“He wanted me to do my own show,” Winkler added. “And I said, ‘But I live so well with this, with this family.’ Can you imagine now we’re gonna cast new people? I don’t know if I’m gonna have chemistry with them. I’m just gonna go, ‘Aaayyy’ for, like, a half an hour?”

During Happy Days’ heyday, Winkler’s Fonzie lived in an apartment on top of the Cunningham family’s (Howard, Bosley, Ross, Moran) garage. He became like a member of their family and was a featured character in nearly every episode.

Had Winkler been on board with adding Fonzie’s name to Happy Days, Howard would have bowed out right then.

“It made perfect sense that you’d build this Fonzie character and maximize that. Howard told Vulture in 2025. “But the optics of now being in a show called Fonzie’s Happy Days, my ego wouldn’t allow for that. I wasn’t bluffing. I would’ve left.”

“I later found out Henry himself thought it was a terrible idea,” Howard continued. “Years later, Henry said they were ready to do a spinoff and other things for Fonzie and he just said, ‘Why fix it if it’s not broken? My success depends on the ensemble I’m in.'”
