Kyiv/Moscow, Nov. 8 (SANA) Russia and Ukraine exchanged heavy drone strikes overnight, leaving at least seven people dead and several others injured, damaging energy infrastructure and cutting external electricity supplies to the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
Ukraine’s air force said Sunday it had shot down or neutralized 137 of 164 drones launched by Russia since Saturday evening, as authorities reported casualties and damage across several regions.
In eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, military administration head Vadym Filashkin said five civilians had been killed and five others injured over the past 24 hours.
In the southern port city of Odesa, regional military administration head Serhiy Lysak reported one death and damage to infrastructure.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service also reported one person injured and damage to residential buildings in the western city of Khmelnytskyi following a drone attack.
In northwestern Ukraine, Rivne regional military administration head Oleksandr Koval said an overnight Russian drone strike had destroyed a building and sparked a fire at a civilian industrial facility in the Sarny district.
Ukrainian energy company DTEK said Russian strikes had severely damaged electricity infrastructure in the Dnipropetrovsk region, leaving more than 600,000 people without power.
Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant loses external power
The Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine also lost its external electricity supply after a damaged transmission line was automatically disconnected, the plant’s administration said Sunday.
In a statement carried by Russian media, the administration said protection systems had shut down the Ferrosplavna power line and that backup diesel generators were supplying electricity to equipment essential for the plant’s safe operation.
The Zaporizhzhia facility, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, is located in Enerhodar and has been under Russian control since 2022.
The loss of external power adds to longstanding concerns about the safety of the facility, which relies on electricity to operate essential cooling and safety systems.
Russia reports casualties and widespread drone interceptions
Across the border, Belgorod regional governor Alexander Shuvayev said one civilian had been killed and three others injured in 138 Ukrainian attacks over the previous 24 hours.
He said Russian air defenses had intercepted or disabled 106 Ukrainian drones over the region.
Russia’s Defense Ministry separately reported intercepting and destroying 142 drones over several Russian regions.
Kursk regional governor Alexander Khinshtein said another 267 Ukrainian drones had been shot down over his region during the same period. He also accused Ukrainian forces of shelling areas from which residents had been evacuated.
The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces had struck an electrical substation near Beloshitsy in Ukraine’s Zhytomyr region, claiming it supplied power to military-industrial facilities.
It also claimed to have targeted a container ship southwest of Odesa in the Black Sea that was transporting weapons and military equipment to Ukraine.
Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, while Kyiv has expanded its use of long-range drones to strike military and infrastructure targets inside Russia.
The latest exchanges highlight the continuing pressure on civilian infrastructure on both sides of the conflict, particularly Ukraine’s electricity network, as the war continues.
