Justin Timberlake is finally addressing long-standing rumors that his 2006 hit “What Goes Around… Comes Around” is about Britney Spears.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the song was the third single off his album FutureSex/LoveSounds. Fans quickly speculated that it was about Spears, even though the couple had been broken up for more than four years when the song was released. They also considered the track a follow-up to 2003’s “Cry Me a River.” The latter was also believed to be about Spears, largely because its music video featured a love interest who resembled the “…Baby One More Time” singer.
While appearing on a recent episode of Complex’s “Re-Rank” YouTube series, which features artists ranking their best songs, Timberlake explained that the song’s inspiration didn’t come from his own life.
“Maybe I should dispel a rumor at this point, which has gone around forever, which is like, it’s not a personal story from mine,” he said. “It’s actually a personal story from a friend’s. I asked permission.”
Timberlake’s friend was going through a breakup at the time, and he wanted to capture what he was going through in the song.
“He was just going through it and he was telling me what had happened and I said, ‘Do you mind if I write about this?’ And I quote, my friend said, ‘Yeah, torch that b*tch. What goes around comes around.’ And I was like, ‘I have to go. Thank you,’” he explained.
The 45-year-old recalled that he wrote the song quickly after their conversation.
“This song was written in, I mean, damn near 20 minutes,” Timberlake said. “Like, it was just flowing. The interlude that goes with it, like it’s just, and then you put the video with it, there’s a 10-minute video we shot for it, like this just hit on all cylinders for me.”
The singer also revealed that the track is one of his favorites, ranking it “one or two” in his discography.
Timberlake won the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Performance for “What Goes Around… Comes Around” in 2008. The track was also nominated for Record of the Year but lost to Amy Winehouse for “Rehab.”
