James Denton is no stranger to intense onscreen drama, having spent eight seasons as Mike Delfino, a plumber with a troubled past on Desperate Housewives. But his newest project, the Hallmark Channel Christmas movie A Season of Promises, features an entirely different type of intensity, with scenes he calls “the best I’ve ever done in Hallmark movies.”
“It was fantastic in so many ways,” he exclusively told Parade of filming the movie with fellow Hallmark fan-favorites Ali Liebert and Brooke D’Orsay, who play his estranged daughters, united by one thing: hoping to help their dad, Ed, find love again after their mother’s death.
Even though there’s love in the air for some characters in the movie, Denton said, “One of the things I loved about the movie is the centerpiece is not a romantic relationship…it’s the family. The father and daughters and their journey back to each other, as they’ve been estranged since their mom’s passing.”
“Being a dad,” he told Parade, “it taps into some things you don’t normally get to do in Hallmark movies that are (usually) more romantically-centered. So that was fun.”
Denton, 63, shares son Sheppard, 23, and daughter Malin, 21, with wife Erin O’Brien. He gushed over Liebert and D’Orsay’s ability to dive deep with each other like real siblings, noting, “The scenes that were really emotional and really intense were some of the best, probably the best I’ve ever done in Hallmark movies.”
After starring in many Hallmark rom-coms over the years, including 2025’s A Grand Ole Opry Christmas, Denton said he wasn’t “disparaging” any of his other movies, but acknowledged that “they’re a little formulaic, and we do the same thing on purpose in these movies because people love it.”
In A Season of Promises, however, Denton loved getting a chance to “stretch that box” and deliver something Hallmark fans don’t typically anticipate.
Liebert told Parade that because she’d previously directed D’Orsay in her 2024 holiday Hallmark movie, Deck the Halls on Cherry Lane, “We knew each other before and had this great relationship, which is an awesome foundation to then put all of the juicy, angsty bits on top.”
One scene, when the sisters are “at each other’s throats,” Denton said, wound up “completely different” from what they’d briefly rehearsed because Liebert and D’Orsay dared to dive in even deeper.
He recalled, “I’m standing there, kind of bouncing, going, ‘Okay, how do I play this now? Because now I can’t be mean to her because she’s too wounded.’ And that’s just good acting.”
“That doesn’t always happen in any of these movies,” Denton continued. “So, to do that with these two, to watch them work together and the things they were able to tap into because of their personal relationship and the freshness of that, it was so much more satisfying than you often get on these types of projects.”
Hallmark Channel’s A Season of Promises premieres on Sunday, November 8 at 8 p.m. ET/PT and will be available to stream via Hallmark+ the following day.
