Jackie Kennedy reportedly told a secret lover that she regretted her marriage to Aristotle Onassis.
Architect John Carl “Jack” Warnecke wrote in his posthumous book, Camelot’s Architect: The Untold Story of Jackie Kennedy, Lafayette Square and a Secret Romance, that not only did he have a two-year love affair with the former first lady after the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy, but also that she revealed her thoughts about her famed second marriage.
In his book, part of which has been excerpted in People magazine ahead of its Nov. 10 publication, Warnecke explains that Jackie had asked him to have lunch with her at her Paris apartment following her marriage to the Greek shipping magnate in October 1968.
“The rooms were large and dark,” Warnecke wrote. “Then suddenly we arrived at a light and contemporary room by a garden where a table was set for our lunch.”
“Ari had let Jackie free in this small area,” he continued in the book. “She unhesitatingly expressed frustration that this one room was all she was allowed to decorate [and] told me she believed that her marriage to Onassis was the biggest mistake she had ever made.”
While Warnecke first met JFK in 1956, the late president recommended Warnecke for a project at Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C. after he was elected in 1960.
Warnecke, a divorced father of four, was later chosen to design JFK’s gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery in D.C.
A year after the assassination, the architect struck up a romantic relationship with Jackie, which reportedly lasted for two years before becoming a friendship.
In 1964, Warnecke met with Jackie to review work for the gravesite, People reports.
“It was that weekend when we first opened up our feelings toward each other — a weekend beyond our imagination,” he wrote. “We both secretly knew we were in love with each other.”
Jackie’s marriage to Onassis lasted until his death in 1975. She died from cancer in 1994.
Warnecke died from pancreatic cancer in 2010. Before his death, he asked his daughter Margo Warnecke Merck to publish his memoir.
