Schedule Strength, Roobroeck’s Huge Night, Kantserov, Korchinski, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks had three straight three-game weeks, followed by a five-day break. Starting with yesterday’s game against the Panthers, the Hawks are now entering back-to-back four-game weeks, followed by a four-day break. Oh, and most of the games this week and next are against high, if not top-level teams — again. Whomever made the schedule this year… come on!

Mark Lazerus said he has the Blackhawks at the third-hardest schedule in the NHL to date. He asked head coach Jeff Blashill if the strength of the Hawks’ opponent factors into their evaluation process.

“We’ve played some teams that are great hockey teams and they’re kind of ready, made, built teams that have had success year after year. They’re not feeling their way into this. … There’s a few teams that are step above and [the Panthers are] certainly one of them. Now that’s a great challenge for us. We want to be that team. So you constantly put yourself in these games and see how you do. And then you learn from that and you go to the next one.

“There’s certain games we’ve played well and it might not be the same opponent. … So you evaluate on the curve a little bit. You understand who you’re playing and the challenges that you face. Ultimately we want to be a team that’s at the top of the mountain. We’ve got a long way to go, but to do that you got to be able to beat the really good teams. But you certainly do have an understanding of the type of team you’re playing.”

Mark Lazerus noted all of the very real circumstances the Blackhawks have faced early this season, but asked a tough question: when do we grade without the curve? I appreciate this quote in Laz’s piece from Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice

“You get into a 2-2 game, you want that win, right?” he said. “More times than not, when you’ve got a real young team, it kind of goes away from you. And then (one day) it doesn’t. And as painful as it is now, when you look at teams like Montreal — their star players have hit the age of 25, (which is) really when they start to turn for you. And then (at) 27, they hit their prime, and you forget all about it.”

So yeah, patience is still necessary. But, at the same time, results need to start happening. Yes, the defensive group is young and they’re going to make mistakes. But the power play is stocked with talent; it can’t go 0-for-7 in a game. Cannot. And, on Sunday night, a one-goal game is changed dramatically by better special teams (and Ryan Donato finishing one of his five Grade A chances).

They're too young. It's too soon. The schedule's been too tough. They are. It is. It has been. But when will we finally stop grading the Blackhawks on a curve?NEW column: t.co/k13I1jvwHv

    — Mark Lazerus (@MarkLazerus) October 25, 2026 Usually I leave prospect highlights until later in our bullets, but Blackhawks prospect Ryan Roobroeck HAD A DAY on Sunday. He scored his 10th goal of the season on the power play… his 11th goal of the season short-handed…. and his 12th, completing the hat trick, was the overtime game-winner! The short-handed goal (the middle clip below) is filthy. Roobroeck might owe that defender’s parents an apology.

    — Guelph Storm (@Storm_City) October 25, 2026 Kevin Korchinski was good enough last night that he should get more run. When I asked his thoughts on Korchinski’s performance after the game, Blashill mentioned that he (and Sam Rinzel) undoubtedly want the bad line change back that led to the game-winning goal. Blashill did say Korchinski did a lot of good things last night, though. We’ll see if he gets another shot Tuesday night with the Kings in town. I mentioned Roman Kantserov being more offensive in our Sunday bullets, and he was precisely that last night — and it paid. Kantserov scored a desperately-needed goal for the Hawks to tie the game.

    — Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) October 25, 2026 The New York Rangers signed veteran goaltender James Reimer to a one-year deal on Sunday. A tough blow for the Kraken: Jared McCann will be out for 10 weeks because of a lower-body injury. Finally, Canucks fans were on one last night with Quinn Hughes back in town for the first time.
