Sectionals finalist Talan Denison has announced his verbal commitment to swim for the University of Nebraska, Omaha beginning in the fall of 2027.
“I’m very excited to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Nebraska Omaha. I’d like to thank my family and the entire team at Scottsdale Aquatic Club. Also, thank you to Coach Scott, Coach Elijah, Coach Laurel and Coach Crystal for supporting and guiding me every step of the way. I’m incredibly grateful to Coach Jessica for giving me this opportunity! Go Mavs!”
The Arizona native is a senior at Cactus Shadows High School in Scottsdale and currently trains year-round with Scottsdale Aquatic Club, where he primarily specializes in mid-distance and distance freestyle, as well as some backstroke.
At the 2025 Gulf Southern Senior Championship in December, Denison posted a series of top performances, logging a personal best time in five events. He placed 4th in the 1650 free (16:30.71), 6th in the 1000 free (9:45.15), 11th in the 500 free (4:46.00) and 30th in the 200 free (1:45.85), setting a lifetime best in all but the 1650. He also contested the 100 back (57.87 – PB) and 200 back (2:05.22) and set a personal best time in the 100 free (49.66) as the leadoff on the 400 free relay.
Denison turned in another string of fast swims at the 2026 Four Corners Sectionals in March. He finished 24th in both the 1000 free (9:33.11 – PB) and 1650 free (16:10.22 – PB) and 50th in the 200 free (1:43.03 – PB). He also finished 36th in the 500 free (4:39.12) after setting a best time of 4:38.47 during prelims.
At the 2026 Boise Sectionals (LCM) over the summer, Denison earned a second swim in two events and clocked a string of personal best performances. He placed 7th in the 1500 free (16:48.51 – PB), 12th in the 800 free (8:45.39 – PB), 13th in the 400 free (4:12.91 – PB) and 15th in the 200 free (1:58.77) after setting a lifetime best time of 1:58.74 during prelims. He also helped his team secure the championship title in the 800 free relay and clocked a personal best time of 54.47 in the 100 free as the leadoff on the 400 free relay.

200 free – 1:43.03 500 free – 4:38.37 1000 free – 9:33.11 1650 free – 16:10.22A Division I Mid-Major program, Nebraska-Omaha competes in the Summit League, with the men’s team taking 3rd at last season’s conference championships. Based on the results from the 2026 Summit League Championships, Denison would have placed 9th in the 1650 free and been just outside the cutoff for a second swim in the 200 free and 500 free, giving him a chance to score a few points early on.
On the team itself, Denison would have ranked 1st in the 1000 free, 2nd in the 1000 free, 3rd in the 500 free and 7th in the 200 free last season. Since one of the Mavericks’ top freestylers, Kyle Kulow, is a senior this season, Denison should be a key contributor and help fill the gaps when he joins the team next fall.
The only other recruit currently committed to join Denison in Omaha is Maximiliano Aguirre from Montana, who primarily specializes in breast, fly and IM.
