Denver Broncos, Bo Nix find groove as team improves to 5-2

The Denver Broncos have improved to 5-2 on the season after they beat the Arizona Cardinals 30-16 behind a big day from Bo Nix.

Like Stella found her groove, Nix gave his best John Wick impression by saying, “Yeah, I’m thinking I’m back.” It was also the first time we’ve seen Nix smile on the football field in a minute.

Denver Broncos improve to 5-2 behind Bo Nix’s big day vs. Cardinals

The Denver Broncos offense has struggled all season long, and while some struggles for that unit remained on Sunday, Bo Nix’s previous struggles did not.

Nix found his groove and, more importantly, had some moments that looked like they brought him back to the guy we all saw last season. It all started when Nix rattled off a 62-yard touchdown run, the longest touchdown run by a quarterback in the Next Gen Stats era, since 2016.

He hit 19.90 mph, and that run brought back glimpses of Nix’s legs that we saw last season against the Houston Texans and New York Giants. Nix finished the game as the team’s leading rusher, with seven carries for 73 yards and a touchdown, and finished 15-of-29 passing for 222 yards and one touchdown.

Nix looked more confident, especially throwing downfield, connecting with Courtland Sutton on the first play from scrimmage for 20 yards, throwing in between a triangle of defenders, a 27-yard back shoulder to Jaylen Waddle, and a 47-yard hole shot to Marvin Mims, and also attacking the middle of the field.

Denver’s offensive line still struggled at times with allowing pressure off the left side and inside, forcing Nix to roll to his right and throw the ball away at times. Jonah Coleman came in and added a spark to the Broncos’ run game, finishing with nine carries for 54 yards and picking up several key first downs, holding up in pass protection, and catching a first down.

The Broncos did exactly what they should have done against a scrappy Cardinals team.

Broncos defense turns the pass rush heat up once again

After having 17 quarterback hits last week against the Seattle Seahawks, the Broncos pass rush dialed up 13 quarterback hits on Sunday against Jacoby Brissett and the Cardinals, including four from Malcolm Roach and three from Zach Allen.

Denver’s defense finished with three sacks, with Alex Singleton, Sai’vion Jones, and Roach getting home on Brissett. Singleton finished the game with 19 tackles, one sack, two quarterback hits, and one tackle for a loss.

The Broncos held the Cardinals to 94 yards rushing and limited them to 5-of-17 efficiency on third down.

Nik Bonitto finished Sunday’s game with a career-high 13 pressures.

Now, a rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8 at Empower Field.

    Broncos news and notes

WR Jaylen Waddle left the game with a chest injury in the fourth quarter and did not return. DL Zach Allen left the game with a hamstring injury, but remained on the sideline and met with the media after the game, which indicates he should be fine. The Broncos finished 3-1 against the NFC West this season with Sunday’s win. Courtland Sutton moved into fifth-place all-time in Broncos history in receiving yards, surpassing 6500 yards in his career. Bo Nix became the QB in NFL history to rush for a 50+ yard touchdown and pass for a 50+ yard touchdown in the same game joining Justin Fields (2022), Lamar Jackson (2022), Cam Newton (2012), and Ace Parker (1938).
