Blackhawks 2, Panthers 3 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

It took less than three minutes for the Blackhawks to get on the board, and they were putting pressure on the Panthers early. But Florida isn’t who and what they are because a quick early goal changes anything. Less than four minutes later, a loose puck that only Sandis Vilmanis found in front of the net got tapped in to tie the game at one.

In the middle of the first, the Blackhawks had a 5-on-3 for 53 seconds. They got a couple incredibly good looks with the second unit on the ice late in the advantage but couldn’t score. Niko Mikkola came out of the box second and got a breakaway immediately (because of course), that was thankfully saved. But the Blackhawks went into their usual scramble drill. Florida got their first power play of the game and it took them a whole five seconds to score and take a 2-1 lead.

The Blackhawks had four minutes of power play time early in the second period and got nothing out of it. However, in the middle of the period the Blackhawks got a marvelous shift from their top line and actually got a goal out of it! The Blackhawks actually skated a very good second period and (public stats, not internal) had a 12-9 advantage in scoring chances and 3-2 advantage in high danger chances in the middle frame.

The Hawks battled hard in the third period with a LOT of whistles, but a soft goal gave Florida the lead inside the final three minutes of regulation.

    Star 1: Ryan Greene

Greene had a strong first period overall, including his first goal of the season. He had two of the Blackhawks’ five high danger chances

    Star 2: Anton Frondell

Frondell had a really good afternoon against a tough opponent. Thru two periods he had six shot attempts, three scoring chances and four blocked shots. And he was around 50 percent at the dot (6 of 13 thru two periods).

    Star 3: Roman Kantserov

Here’s Kantserov’s goal from the second period that tied the game at two. The Hawks’ top line was on fire in the second period.

    Key Takeaways

Ryan Donato had a couple incredible looks that he couldn’t finish in the first period. He also had three of the Blackhawks’ eight hits in the opening 20 minutes. He had another Grade A look on the power play early in the second period and that went wide. And another one shortly after the Hawks tied the game at two. He had the game on his stick late in the third period — and his stick broke. Absolutely brutal afternoon for Donato. This game should have been easily been 4-1 or worse at the end of the first period, but Knight made some huge saves. He would have been one of my three stars, but the third goal for Florida was a tough one to allow. There were a couple legit big hits by Panthers in the first period, including an open-ice skated-into-a-brick-wall hit Carter Verhaeghe put on Artyom Levshunov with around three minutes left. Levshunov skated slowly to the bench but did take another shift in the period, during which he delivered a good hit. According to Natural Stat Trick, the Panthers had a 10-3 advantage in scoring chances and 6-2 advantage in high danger chances at 5-on-5 in the first period. However, the Blackhawks had eight scoring chances(!) and two high danger chances while at 5-on-4 in the period. Of course, that’s the data on Natural Stat Trick — not the Blackhawks’ internal numbers. I’m ready for the Blackhawks to move on from Teuvo Teräväinen on the point on the power play at any time. It would have been nice, if they wanted to keep the top unit all left-handed, to see Kevin Korchinski get a look there. But… no. Korchinski had a fine afternoon. He was plus-two and the Blackhawks had more shot attempts while he was on the ice than the Panthers did. If you want to see
