For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Irvine, California native Michael Wang has announced his verbal commitment to the admission process* at Princeton University for 2028-29. He told SwimSwam:
“First of all, I would like to acknowledge Coach Ken LaMont and Coach John Mykkanen, and all my friends at NOVA who pushed me and encouraged me and made me the swimmer I am today. I’d also like to thank my family for introducing me to this sport and for their love and support along the way.”
Wang, a junior at Northwood High School, swims year-round with Irvine Novaquatics and specializes in sprint and mid-distance freestyle. We named him a “Best of the Rest” recruit on our Way Too Early list of top swimmers from the class of 2028.
At 2025 Winter Juniors West, he competed in the 50/100/200/500 free and 100 fly, earning a PB in the 50 free (20.76) leading off the NOVA 200 free relay. A week later, at CA/NV Sectionals, he put up lifetime bests in the 100 free (44.76), 50 back (23.93), and 100 back (53.22). At Oceanside Sectionals at the end of February, he lowered his times in the 100 free (44.57), 50 fly (22.78), and 100 fly (49.93).
In high school season, Wang concentrated mainly on the 100/200 free, finishing in 6th place (44.48) and 4th place (1:37.37), respectively, at the California State Meet as a sophomore.
Wang had a similar experience with long course, starting off strong and dropping time throughout the season. He clocked a PB of 56.27 in the 100 fly at Walnut Sectionals, then swam a 50.54 100 free at U.S. Nationals and a 23.88 50 free/1:52.68 200 free at Summer Junior Nationals.
Wang will join the Tigers’ class of 2032 with swimmer Ries Joos and diver Connor Carson. His 200 free time would already score at Men’s Ivy League Championships, and he’s not far off in the 50/100, where it took 20.05/44.02 to get second swims at the 2026 conference meet.
Best SCY times:
50 free – 20.79 100 free – 44.40 200 free – 1:37.17 500 free – 4:31.25 100 fly – 49.11Best LCM times:
50 free – 23.88 100 free – 50.54 200 free – 1:52.68 400 free – 4:02.27 100 fly – 56.27*Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.
