‘No need to smile’: Verstappen unimpressed despite COTA P2

Max Verstappen emerged from qualifying for the United States Grand Prix with a front-row starting position, but little appetite for celebration.

Second place at the Circuit of the Americas was a strong result on paper, but for the Red Bull driver, however, it was a missed opportunity dressed up as success.

Having looked capable of challenging for pole position through the opening stages, Verstappen suddenly found himself wrestling with a car that refused to deliver the grip he needed when it mattered most.

Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli seized the opportunity, claiming pole with a 0.179-second advantage over the four-time world champion.

Verstappen finished just 0.036 seconds ahead of team-mate Isack Hadjar, who secured an impressive third place for his best qualifying performance yet. The Dutchman could hardly dismiss the result, but the manner in which it unfolded left him distinctly unimpressed.

    Grip disappears when it matters

Verstappen's frustration stemmed from the contrast between his confidence in Q1 and Q2 and the sudden loss of competitiveness in the decisive final segment.

Having completed his first Q2 lap on used tyres and still felt comfortable, he expected a fresh set to unlock even more performance.

    Instead, the opposite happened.

“Q1 and Q2 I felt really good. I mean, I did my first lap in Q2 just on a used set," he said.

"So when I went to Q3, I had high hopes, but unfortunately, it just felt bad. Like I just didn’t really have the grip that I wanted, so I couldn’t lean on the rear that I wanted in the final sector and that just cost me too much time.

"And then I mean, when you look at the sheets and you are starting P2 it's nice and it’s a good result, but I was hoping for more and this was just not it.

“But if it’s, let’s say, not a great feeling in qualifying and then that’s a P2, I’ll take it. But there’s no need to then smile and be super happy about it.”

The changing conditions offered a possible explanation, with the wind strengthening as qualifying progressed. Verstappen acknowledged its influence without accepting it as a satisfactory explanation for the sudden deterioration in feel.

"The wind for sure picked up, but even with that it's not an excuse why Q3 felt like... the way it felt for me in the first round,” he explained.

“The second round for sure it was influenced by the wind, but yeah, it just it just didn't feel the same.

"Q2 felt great on a used set and then you think okay, you put a new set on now it's time to to really push and it just didn't come alive. That was my feeling but that can happen."

Red Bull faces a qualifying puzzle

Verstappen had completed only six laps in Q2, deliberately conserving tyres for the final shootout. However, he dismissed any suggestion that switching from used rubber to a fresh set was responsible for the loss of performance.

“No problem normally. I’ve done that many times before. I’ve even qualified once with only two sets," he revealed.

“So yeah, there is no explanation why in Q3 it just didn’t come together, or apart from the last lap where I think everyone struggled for lap time. But it’s something that we have to look at because it’s very odd of course that you have, let’s say, the best feeling on a used set.”

The mystery now gives Red Bull something to investigate before Sunday's race, particularly with Hadjar reporting a similarly positive sensation on used tyres before qualifying third.

That battle will unfold over the very bumps Verstappen has spent the weekend condemning, having branded COTA's surface “unacceptable” and “out of control” on Thursday.

Fourth in the championship on 221 points, the Dutchman remains firmly in pursuit of a third consecutive victory. But after qualifying, his message was unmistakable: second place may be a good result, yet it is no substitute for the pole position he believes was within reach.
