Wizards Escape Late Bulls Rally 124-120, Despite A Caleb 30-Piece

An encouraging first half at the United Center crumbled for our Chicago Bulls, as they dropped their first home game of the year to the visiting Washington Wizards sans No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa, 124-120.

At one point late in the game, Chicago trailed by as many as 21. But Matas Buzelis and Caleb Wilson would not be deterred, helping rally and get the home team within striking distance. Although the Bulls came up short, it was encouraging to see Buzelis submit his first decent game of the season.

The story, though, was Caleb Wilson’s inaugural double-double, a 30-point, 14-rebound, +14 plus-minus outburst (on 10-of-24 shooting from the field and 9-of-11 shooting from the charity stripe) that helped an outmatched Bulls squad sort of keep pace with what’s looking like a semi-respectable Washington club, despite sporting a strange mishmash of vets and pups.

Wrapping up their first of 15 back-to-backs this season, Chicago looked fatigued in the game’s final two frames after rallying to take down the Milwaukee Bucks at Fiserv Forum on Friday.

For Chicago Sports Network, Wayne Randazzo supplied play-by-play while three-time Bulls champion center Will Perdue provided color commentary.

A Stellar First Half Has the Home Crowd Hyped

Wilson was the show all night, but his explosive efforts around the rim revved up the UC faithful in the first half.

He generated most of his offense within three feet of the rack, but he sure made it look pretty, notching 17 points — including 10 off dunks — and seven boards.

Although Buzelis’ shooting wasn’t particularly efficient, he managed to record 10 points mostly off of free throws and looks inside, plus three rebounds.

It was his strongest effort in a first half this regular season, and helped give fans a glimpse at what this dynamic cutting tandem of Buzelis and Wilson could become.

At the break, Chicago paced Washington by five points, 62-57. Jalen Smith, once again notching the start for an injured Nicolas Claxton, chipped in 12 points.

With Josh Giddey once again looking deeply disengaged through two quarters, his backup Tre Jones stepped up offensively, also scoring in double digits with 10 points.

    Bulls Doomed by Third-Quarter Misfires

The third quarter — and the top of the fourth — offered up a more discouraging story.

Wilson ran out of gas a bit, and the Bulls’ lackluster defensive rebounding proved costly.

Abetted in part by capitalizing on second-chance opportunities, the Wizards doubled the Bulls’ offensive output in the third quarter, enjoying a 40-20 scoring edge to head into the fourth quarter up 15, 97-82. Chicago at one point missed 16-of-17 from long range, before a Leonard Miller trey shook them out of their doldrums.

Following an engaged first half, Buzelis was given a quick whistle in the fourth frame. Splitter grew aggrieved with his errant defense.

But then he — and the Bulls — woke up.

By the time the Bulls were trailing Washington 112-96, the game appeared to be all but over with 4:23 remaining. Suddenly, a 19-6 run triggered by jumpers and charity stripe takes from Buzelis, Wilson, and Powell across the next four minutes put the Bulls within a possession, 118-115, at the 23-second mark.

The Bulls fouled Anthony Davis to stop the shout clock, although he nailed both his foul line takes to put his Wizards up by five points, 120-115, at the 17-second mark. The game was ultimately lost during the next possession.

Wilson got the ball near the top of the key, and rather than drive strong with it or force up an instant triple trey, he gathered. That gave Davis enough time to go up strong defensively and sneak in a subtle foul on Wilson while he was forcing up a long range prayer. Splitter had burned through his coach’s challenges by this point, so there was nothing Chicago could do.

Subsequently, Buzelis fouled Trae Young for another shot at a Bulls possession. The four-time All-Star point guard iced both his looks to push Washington up by seven, 122-115. After a quick Splitter timeout (during which Wizards coach Brian Keefe subbed in forward Alex Sarr in Young’s stead), Giddey dished out his ninth dime to Norman Powell for a 27-foot triple.

Ultimately, it proved to be too little, too late. The Wizards sealed the win, 124-120, improving to a 2-1 record to start the year sans Dybantsa.

Davis, who was booed pretty much every time he touched the rock, looked noticeably stronger than any healthy Bulls frontcourt player. He finished with 19 points on 8-of-21 shooting from the field and 3-of-5 shooting from the free throw line, while also grabbing six rebounds, and dishing four dimes. Young led the way for Washington with 25 points on 6-of-13 field goal shooting (4-of-10 shooting from deep) and 9-of-9 free throw shooting, plus nine assists.

Third-year Wizards shooting guard Kyshawn George, still just 22, logged 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor and 6-of-8 shooting from the foul line, along with nine rebounds and five assists. Davis and reserve forward Justin Champagnie (who finished with an 11-point, 14-rebound double-double) may have proved to be tough covers for Wilson defensively, but he ate their lunch on the other end.

Chicago, meanwhile, falls to a 1-2 record on the year, ahead of a brutal upcoming schedule. CHSN’s K.C. Johnson previews the Bulls’ forthcoming next 10 games.

Outside of a little injury luck (or a continued San Antonio Spurs funk), there’s a very real chance that these young Bulls could end this stint with a 1-12 record heading into a Nov. 18 clash against another lottery-bound club, the Brooklyn Nets, and a Nov. 20 NBA Cup rematch with the Wizards.
