Rapper Lil Jon recently discovered that the man he grew up believing was his biological father was not related to him by blood.
The “Get Low” hitmaker opened up about the unexpected discovery in a new interview with PEOPLE, revealing how DNA test results shared by a cousin led him to question his family history.
Lil Jon explained that the revelation came after a cousin took a DNA test to learn more about their family history. When the cousin shared the results, Lil Jon noticed that their genetic match did not make sense.
“You never think that will happen to you,” he told the publication, describing the emotional impact of the discovery.
Lil Jon grew up with his mother, Carrie, and the man he believed was his biological father, Willie. He was raised alongside his siblings and has previously spoken about his childhood and his early interest in music.
Willie died of bone marrow cancer during Lil Jon’s rise to fame in the early 2000s. His mother died in 2013 following a stroke caused by complications from diabetes.
The timing of the revelation has left the musician with questions he may never be able to answer. “Neither one of my fathers are here anymore, nor my mother, so I can’t get answers,” he told PEOPLE.
Lil Jon added that accepting the lack of answers has been difficult, but he is gradually coming to terms with the situation.
The rapper has also heard from family members on his biological father’s side. However, he admitted that he has not yet felt ready to have those conversations.
“I have had my brother and sister reach out on my biological dad’s side, but I haven’t been ready to process that yet and have that conversation, because it’s just so heavy, man,” he said.
The revelation is among the personal experiences Lil Jon discusses in I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me, which is scheduled for release on October 20.
The memoir arrives during a difficult period for the musician, who is also grieving the death of his son, Nathan Smith, known professionally as DJ Young Slade. Nathan died at 27 in February 2026. His death was ruled an accidental drowning in the setting of psilocybin use, according to PEOPLE.
Lil Jon has spoken about finding ways to move forward while processing his loss. He also draws strength from his young daughter, Nahara, whom he shares with his partner, Jamila Sozahdah.
Reflecting on what fatherhood has taught him, the rapper emphasized the importance of making time for loved ones rather than assuming there will always be another opportunity.
“Fatherhood has taught me that family is everything,” he told PEOPLE.
