Hanshin Tigers Agree To Post Teruaki Sato

The Hanshin Tigers made it official today, announcing that Teruaki Sato will be posted for Major League teams this offseason.  ing has been rumored to be in the works for months, and at least five (and likely many more) MLB clubs have already shown interest in the reigning Central League MVP.

Sato’s stock is high enough that MLBTR’s Steve Adams placed him second among all free agents in the September edition of the free agent power rankings, which rank players based on earning potential.  Sato is relatively young (turning 28 in March), can play both third base and right field, and he has been arguably the best hitter in Nippon Professional Baseball over the last two seasons.  That said, Sato isn’t considered a strong defender at either position, his strikeout and contact rates leave something to be desired, and there is the standard uncertainty over how star NPB players will adjust to Major League Baseball.

These concerns notwithstanding, Sato figures to benefit within a free agent class that is pretty thin on premium hitters.  While Sato posted good power numbers over his first four seasons with the Tigers, he kicked things up a notch in 2025-26, winning MVP honors last season and very likely a repeat this year.  The 2026 campaign saw Sato win the Central League triple crown by recording 39 homers and 106 RBI to go along with a .306/.383/.609 slash line in 614 plate appearances.

It should be noted that Sato won’t officially be posted until some time after the NPB season is over.  (The Japan Series is set to begin on Saturday, when the Yokohama DeNA BayStars face the defending champion Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks.)  Once posted, Sato will have 45 days to sign a contract with an MLB, and the Tigers would then receive a posting fee determined by the size of Sato’s deal.  The fee would equal 20% of the first $25MM of Sato’s guaranteed big league contract, 17.5% of the next $25MM, and 15% of anything beyond the $50MM mark.  If Sato doesn’t sign within that 45-day window, he’d return to the Tigers for the 2027 season.

The impending lockout and transactions freeze beginning December 1 will add some uncertainty to his situation.  The timing of the lockout essentially cuts Sato’s window in half, so if he doesn’t have a contract finalized before December 1, he’d have to wait out the lockout before resuming talks with Major League teams in the remaining three or so weeks of his posting period.  While it’s much more likely than not that Sato will indeed be with an MLB team next year, if he doesn’t sign before December 1, it’s at least possible that a lengthy lockout could result in Sato simply returning to the Tigers and waiting until next winter (and more labor stability) to make the jump to North American baseball.
