Michael Fishman continues to focus on his gratitude for his days as a child star on Roseanne, despite the show’s heartbreaking ending.
On Oct. 18, the actor who played youngest child DJ Conner on the beloved ABC sitcom, posted an Instagram video to thank fans for their support on the 38th anniversary of the series premiere. He also recalled being heartbroken when the series ended twice, 30 years apart.
“October 18, 1988, my whole world changed,” Fishman, 44, said in the clip. “Thirty-eight years ago, the Roseanne show premiered and overnight we became part of people’s families. And through the years and all the controversies and the chaos and everything, I have loved the experience and the journey. I remain eternally grateful to Carsey-Werner and Roseanne and all of the people that I worked with who shaped me so much through those years and stories that shaped so many of you.”
Fishman shared that the legendary comedy series, which originally aired from 1988 to 1997, continues to shape him and the work that he does today.
“When the first show ended, I was a brokenhearted teenager, I was crushed,” he recalled of the show’s original end in 1997.
He then addressed the one-season Roseanne revival in 2018, which was canceled after star Roseanne Barr posted a controversial remark about former Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett on Twitter.
“To come back was a dream beyond imagination,” Fishman said of the short-lived revival. “And when it ended in controversy, I was heartbroken in a whole new way.”

Fishman noted that he spent the whole first year of The Conners—a spinoff series that followed the TV family after the “death” of matriarch Roseanne— “fighting” for the original show’s legacy so that its returns could continue to be a comfort show for fans. His character stopped appearing in the show after four seasons, but the actor still remains grateful for his time on the series.
“So I thank you,” Fishman told his Instagram followers. “I know every time I think of this day I’m grateful for the memories we share and the laughs and some of the tears. And I think to myself, the legacy of the Roseanne show belongs to all of you who have supported it through the years.”
Earlier this year, Fishman said he felt that Roseanne was “rightfully canceled” in 2018 due to Barr’s controversial tweet.
In a lengthy Instagram video, Fishman said, “Dehumanizing people is never a joke.” But he added of Barr, “Good people make mistakes. And I love the one who made this mistake. I always will.”
Barr has no contact with her Roseanne co-stars, which also included John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Lecy Goranson and Sara Gilbert, and she’s made it clear they are not friends.
In September, she fired back at Fishman’s comments about the show’s 2018 cancellation, telling the Can’t Be Censored podcast that her former TV son was a “brainwashed bigot.”
“Don’t put my name in your f—ing mouth; shut the f— up,” she recalled telling Fishman, adding, “I’m glad they fired you because I was the only reason you were ever on that show. They wanted to get rid of you in the reboot and I made them take you back.”
