Sectionals finalist Lysander Mihaly has announced his verbal commitment to swim for the University of Pennsylvania beginning in the fall of 2027.

I’d also like to thank Coach Mike, Coach Andrew, and Coach Emma for giving me this amazing opportunity. Go Quakers!”
The North Carolina native is heading into his senior year at Riverside High School in Durham; he competed for the school’s varsity swimming and diving team as a freshman and junior. He also currently trains year-round with North Carolina Aquatic Club, primarily specializing in free, breast and IM.
Mihaly qualified for the 2026 NCHSAA (North Carolina High School Athletic Association) 7A State Championship this past season, where he claimed the runner-up spot in the 500 free (4:25.79) and took 3rd in the 100 breast (57.13), logging a lifetime best in both events.
At the 2026 Cary Sectionals in March, Mihaly posted a series of top performances. He was the runner-up in the 500 free (4:25.17), 1000 free (9:07.59) and 1650 free (15:13.39), clocking a personal best time in each. He also took 3rd in the 400 IM (3:53.66) and 200 free (1:37.81) and 5th in the 200 breast (2:02.21), again logging personal bests in all three races.
A few weeks later, Mihaly turned in another string of lifetime best times at the NCAC Spring Tar Heel States meet. He won the 50 free (21.30), 100 free (45.64), 1000 free (9:01.30) and 100 back (52.85), and he placed 2nd in the 50 fly (23.52) and 400 IM (3:52.85) and 3rd in the 100 fly (51.68), setting a personal best in all but the 100 fly. He also contested the 200 back (1:54.30 – PB) and set a lifetime best during the preliminary heats of the 100 fly (51.06).

Based on the results from the 2026 Ivy League Championships, Mihaly would have placed 10th in the 1000 free and 11th in the 1650 free, and he would have landed in the ‘B’ final in the 400 IM and the ‘C’ final in the 200 free, 500 free and 200 breast. With another full season before he arrives on campus, it remains to be seen exactly how the rosters will shake out, but Mihaly looks to already be in a position to be a strong contributor for the Quakers.
Currently set to join Mihaly in Penn’s class of 2031 are Alex Daile, Alex Koo, Eric Chen, Julian Willoughby and Ben Liang, who should all make for strong training partners over the course of their four years together.
