Junior Nationals qualifier James Brandall has announced his verbal commitment to swim and study at Penn State University beginning in the fall of 2028. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Penn State! Thank you to my parents, brother, Coach Ben Gibson, and teammates for the incredible support through this process. I especially want to thank Coaches Andre, Oliver, Carrie and Andrew from Quicksilver. Lastly I want to thank the Penn State Swimming staff, especially Coach Hollie, Coach Mike and Coach Tommy for giving me this incredible opportunity! WE ARE!
A junior at Leland High School in San Jose, California, Brandall has been a member of his school’s varsity swimming team since his freshman year. He also trains year-round with Quicksilver Swimming, where he primarily specializes in breaststroke.
Brandall’s top meet of the 2025-26 season was the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Central Coast Section Championships, where he finished fifth in the 100 breast (55.92) with his current career best, an improvement of nearly three quarters of a second on the season, before going on to place 21st in the 100 breast (56.31) at the CIF State Championships.
Brandall’s lifetime best of 2:05.48 in the 200 breast dates back to December 2024; he swam a season-best 2:07.08 in 2025-26.
Over the summer, Brandall posted long course times of 29.20 in the 50 breast and 1:04.48 in the 100 breast that qualified him for Summer Junior Nationals, where he placed 53rd in the 50 (29.44) and 95th in the 100 (1:05.66).
