Top Center Prospect Viewed as a “Perfect Fit” for the Bears

The more I read about Sam Hecht, the more I think about him as an ideal solution to a problem that I wasn’t anticipating needing to solve entering the offseason.

Drew Dalman’s surprise retirement in March created a long-term need for the Chicago Bears at center. And while the team swung a trade with the New England Patriots for Garrett Bradbury, the team still has a long-term need at the position because the projected 2026 starter is set to hit free agency after this season. This is where the Kansas State product comes into play.

This tweet is a reaction to ESPN’s Jordan Reid calling Sam Hecht a “perfect fit” for Chicago’s football team in the 2026 NFL Draft:

Sam Hecht sounds like the perfect Day 2 target

Sam Hecht is high on my list of best fits for the Chicago Bears in the 2026 NFL Draft. And I’m not changing my position after reading that ESPN’s Jordan Reid called Hecht a “perfect fit” for the Bears in the third round. It might make some Bears fans antsy to wait out three rounds and 88 picks before the team addresses its long-term center needs with pick No. 89. However, the juice could be worth the squeeze if Hecht is as good as his prospect profile indicates.

Hecht began his college football career as a walk-on at Kansas State, but finished it as the team’s starter at center for each of the team’s last 25 games since the start of the 2024 season. He saved his best for last on campus, earning first-team All-Big 12 honors as a senior and being invited to the East-West Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl. When asked about the possibility of playing for the Bears and blocking for quarterback Caleb Williams, Hecht sounded like he would be up to the task. Given Bears General Manager Ryan Poles’ history of drafting Senior Bowl prospects, Hecht’s name is one to watch when Chicago goes on the clock with its Day 2 picks.

Even though Sam Hecht appears to be an ideal target for the Bears with one of their three Day 2 picks, there is a possibility that he could be gone and off the board by the time Chicago goes on the clock. But I won’t be too upset if that is how the cookie crumbles. After all, Hecht isn’t the only top center prospect generating a buzz this time of year.

ESPN’s Jordan Reid (via Twitter/X) name-checks Logan Jones (Iowa), Jake Slaughter (Florida), and Connor Lew (Auburn) as center prospects joining Sam Hecht as possibly getting tabbed as the first center prospect in the upcoming NFL Draft. If all of those players are available when the time comes for the Bears to pick, it will be interesting to see which one they choose — or if they go in a totally different direction.

It is worth noting that Lew, Hecht, Slaughter, and Jones were available at pick No. 89 when I ran a mock draft exercise using Pro Football Focus’ simulator while writing this post. Meanwhile, prospects such as Eli Stowers (Vanderbilt TE), Treydan Stukes (Arizona DB), and Joshua Josephs (Tennessee EDGE) were the best available players when it was my turn to pick.

For the sake of content, I drafted Stukes to see how the board would fall for me later. As I expected, none of those centers were available when my next turn came in Round 4. However, I was able to snag Kentucky center Jager Burton to fill that particular need. My takeaway here is that while Sam Hecht might be a perfect fit for the Bears, we could see a scenario unfold where Chicago passes on a center to take a different prospect at another position of need. All in all, an exercise like this has me wishing I could fast-forward through the next nine days and get to the 2026 NFL Draft.
