Last Chance for the White Sox, Salary Cap Arguments, Ditka’s Seventh Inning Stretch, and Other Cubs Bullets

Good morning! Although the Cubs have been eliminated for almost two weeks (somehow, it feels like yesterday, yet at the same time, several months ago?), there’s still some baseball to be played. The impending work stoppage surrounding the CBA negotiations has made me appreciate this postseason more than I normally would, because we truly don’t know when there will be games next year, if at all. I tend to think they won’t miss more than a month, but with how much is up in the air right now, don’t take this time of the year for granted.

There were no baseball games yesterday, which made the day feel pretty boring. The White Sox and Guardians are playing the only Division Series that hasn’t wrapped up, although Friday was a travel day as both teams headed to Cleveland for their upcoming Game 5 matchup. Yesterday, Michael shared his thoughts about “rooting” for the White Sox tonight. And he’ll also have a Pre-Gamin’ post for your game thread needs up later. As for the game, the White Sox are starting Sean Burke, while the Guardians will throw their ace, Gavin Williams. Burke threw 5.1 innings in Game 2 of the ALDS, allowing just one run with six strikeouts. Williams has been lights out this October, which is far from surprising. He started Game 2 as well, throwing five innings with 11 strikeouts, allowing just two runs. However, Williams also closed out Game 4 in Chicago on Thursday, tossing a scoreless ninth inning. He only had to throw 18 pitches, but it’s still something to keep an eye on later tonight. No matter who wins tonight, the payroll discrepancy between the remaining teams in the playoffs is MASSIVE. The Dodgers are of course at the top, but there’s a $268 million gap until you reach the Brewers. Although there are still several arguments that can be made in support of a salary cap, these negotiations are bound to get very interesting, especially if someone other than the Dodgers ends up being crowned the champion at the end of October.

    — Honestly Jake (@Honestly_Jake) October 8, 2026 Anthony Rizzo is back in the headlines, as the former Cubs first baseman had some interesting things to say about the New York Yankees organization after they got swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS. Aside from their World Series appearance in 2024, the Yankees have been stuck in what feels like an endless abyss of just existing. They’re always good enough to make the playoffs, but they collapse before threatening for their 28th title in franchise history. Rizzo, who played for the Yankees from 2021 to 2024, went after Jazz Chisholm Jr. and the clubhouse culture, saying they haven’t earned the right to be a “World Series or bust” team.

“We just keep doing the same thing every year and we don’t win” What change do the Yankees need to finally win? ⬇️ pic.twitter.com/OmGw20YmoH

    — Ross and Rizzo Unfiltered (@RossAndRizzo) October 8, 2026 As I’m sure you all know by now, Bears legend Mike Ditka passed away yesterday at the age of 86. Although most of the posts remembering the Chicago icon were about football, I’d be remiss if I didn’t share this amazing clip of Ditka’s seventh-inning stretch at Wrigley Field in 1998.

    — MLB (@MLB) October 9, 2026 Artificial intelligence is becoming a massive part of our lives, whether we like it or not. Sports are adapting to this new lifestyle as well, and that includes baseball. Max Muncy went on Foul Territory yesterday and discussed how some teams are using AI to help them identify pitch-tipping. Teams are always looking for that slight edge to be a tad bit smarter than their opponents. If AI can help them achieve that, more teams will surely adopt this philosophy over the offseason.
