Moises Ballesteros Hit His First (Long) Homer of the Spring, and Then Hit Another

Moises Ballesteros’s hitting style is such that he’s going to notch a whole lot of hits on a whole lot of line drives, but he won’t necessarily be the biggest power producer in the lineup. Sure, you’ll want to see more power come along as he gets more experience, but you also want a guy with that much natural hitting talent to maximize what he’s already good at: impeccable hand-eye coordination, good discipline, tons of contact, line drive stroke, hits sprayed all over the field.

None of which is to say Ballesteros offers NO power. He can of course hit the ball very hard and a very long way in the right circumstances, as he showed off last night on a couple very bad pitches:

Even out in Arizona, it takes some thump to send out 864 feet worth of homers.

While we’re on Moises Ballesteros, I enjoyed this read about how he arrived at this place where the Cubs are expecting a 22-year-old to do a whole lot of hitting for them this year:

A nice quote in there from Ben Brown about a catcher he likes working with:

“From a pitch-calling standpoint, I love the way he thinks,” Cubs pitcher Ben Brown said. “I love the way he goes about hitters. He’s a great hitter himself. He has great plate discipline. What he can do offensively is really special, so I think he brings that into his catching.

“I think everyone, top to bottom, in all honesty, we truly believe that Bally can stick back there. There’s no doubt. He loves to learn. He’s such a good teammate. He’s such a light in the clubhouse. He’s a joy to be around.”
