World Aquatics World Cup #3 – Astana

October 15-17, 2026 Astana, Kazakhstan SCM (25 meters) Meet Central Results Entries How to Watch Recaps: Day 1 Finals

Having swum the 50 free, 100 free, and 50 fly at the first two stops of this year’s World Cup, Cam McEvoy is swapping out the latter of those for something different at the final stop in Astana.

He is opting against the 50 fly and is instead swimming the 200 free, an event he has not swum in short course since clocking 1:44.40 at the 2018 Australian Short Course Championships.

Based on Instagram stories from McEvoy and nightswimpodcast, hosted by NCAA Champion Dax Hill and Bahamian Olympian Elvis Burrows, it appears that a dare from the latter pair may have played a part in McEvoy’s decision to swim the event. McEvoy featured on the podcast earlier this year.

McEvoy is a former Oceanian record holder in the event, as his best time stands at 1:40.80. That was swum at the 2015 Australian Short Course Championships, and he still ranks as the third-fastest Australian in history behind Ed Somerville (1:40.16) and Max Giuliani (1:40.38).

Tomorrow will be the first time since 2020 that McEvoy has swum an event other than the 50 free, 50 fly, or 100 free. He has established himself as a tour de force in the 50 free over the last three years, winning gold at the 2023 World Championships, 2024 Olympics, 2025 World Championships, and 2026 Commonwealth Games, as well as lowering the world record to 20.88 at the China Open in March of this year.

He added the 100 free to his repertoire for the world cup series, having teased a return to the event in which he is the Oceanian record holder earlier this year. He has proved himself elite in the event still, posting times of 45.36, 45.24, and 45.11 over the last two weeks, and beat world record holder Egor Kornev at the final stop.

He has been testing out the event ahead of the World Short Course Championships in December, where he could feature as part of the Australian 4×100 free relay. He may swim the event individually too, given his success over the last few weeks. He sits just 0.27 seconds off the world record, and is the #10 performer in history.

McEvoy could also be part of Australia’s 4×100 free relay in long course over the next couple of years. He owns a best time of 47.04 from the 2016 Olympic Trials, but could only place 7th that summer in Rio.

His last long course 100 free was a 49.21 in December of 2023, but with his endurance clearly extending beyond 50 meters he will be one to keep an eye on this season. Australia won gold at the World Championships in 2025, and in Flynn Southam, Kyle Chalmers, and Harrison Turner have a trio of swimmers who split 46-point this summer.

McEvoy will swim out of the first heat tomorrow, entered with no time. Swimming next to him will be Mongolia’s Bilguun Sanjaa, who was not yet born at the point that McEvoy first swam the 200 free at a World Cup.

McEvoy is not the only swimmer branching out this week. Qin Haiyang, the former 200 breast world record holder, clocked 21.98 in the men’s 50 free to miss the final by less than two tenths of a second, while Kasia Wasick clocked an 18:38.61 to place 6th in the 1500 free on day 1, before winning gold in the 50 free today.
