Former Orange Lutheran football coach Rod Sherman has landed a new coaching gig that closely aligns with one of his roles with the Lancers.
Cal Poly SLO on Tuesday announced Sherman as the inaugural coach of its women’s flag football team.
At Orange Lutheran, Sherman assisted his wife Kristen with the girls flag football team while also leading the football program.
Kristen Sherman, who built Orange Lutheran’s girls flag program into a national power, will serve as an assistant women’s flag football coach at Cal Poly SLO.
She announced her resignation at Orange Lutheran on Monday, about a month after her husband’s split with the football program after five seasons.
Rod Sherman posted a 33-29 record during his tenure, highlighted by a CIF-SS Division 2 title in first season in 2021.
This past summer, Cal Poly SLO announce it would be starting a Division 1 women’s flag football program. The Mustangs are expected to begin competing in the spring of 2028, Kristen Sherman said.
“I believe we’re witnessing something remarkable in the space of women’s flag football,” Rod Sherman said during his introductory press conference Wednesday. “It is without a doubt the fastest growing sport in the country. It will be part of the Olympic movement in 2028 and I believe Cal Poly is on the front end that and it’s going to impact young ladies in ways that we’ve never seen before.”
“I am pleased to announce that Cal Poly is the first Division 1 school in the entire state of California to be offering a varsity flag football program and that’s going to allow us to do an unbelievable job in recruiting California,” he added.
The NCAA has declared women’s flag football as an emerging sport.
