Last summer, weather accounted for 57% of flight delays between June and August, compared with 35% during the fall, highlighting how frequently storms affect peak vacation season.
Travel experts also note that late-season thunderstorms routinely disrupt major connecting airports including Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Charlotte and Atlanta, meaning a storm hundreds of miles away can derail an itinerary even if skies are clear at a traveler's final destination.
