Erin Murphy is best known for playing Tabitha in the classic comedy series Bewitched, but the year before she joined the magical sitcom, she started out in TV commercials. And her first co-star is still the most famous person she ever worked with.
In a new interview with NPR’s Front Row Network, Murphy, 62, looked back on her childhood career, which began when she was 11 months old. The former child actress revealed that when her parents strolled her and her twin sister, Diane, in a double stroller, they got a lot of attention with their blonde, blue-eyed babies.
“Everywhere they would go, people would come up to them and there’d be like casting directors and agents and people say, ‘Oh my gosh, you have beautiful babies, they should be on TV,’ that kind of thing. So it took a few approaches before they thought, you know, maybe we should look into this,” Murphy shared.
“I started doing commercials when I was 11 months old,” Murphy added. “My first major commercial was for Borateem Detergent with Ronald Reagan. He was the spokesperson for Borateem Detergent back before he was governor of California. So I was in a diaper walk. …I’m just toddling around in a diaper and Ronald Reagan is talking about how to keep your diapers clean, and ladies need to do their laundry and that kind of thing.”
“And I had the distinction of being the only actress in history to perform topless with Ronald Reagan,” Murphy joked. “Last time I was ever photographed topless, I should add.”

Murphy previously posted a video of the vintage Borateem commercial on her Facebook page. In the clip, Reagan is standing outside with dozens of laundry products around him, a full 16 years before he was elected President of the United States.
“Some whiten, some brighten, some freshen, some soften,” the future U.S. Commander in Chief says of the laundry aids, before introducing Borateem as a detergent that can take the place of multiple other products. Murphy is seen in the background on a blanket wearing a diaper as her “mom” hangs laundry on a clothesline.
“Probably the most famous person I ever worked with!” Murphy captioned the clip with Reagan. “Yes, that’s me…topless in a diaper.”
Murphy once told The Bewitched & Elizabeth Montgomery Site that she appeared in three commercials as a baby.
“Not long after, we went in to audition for Bewitched,” she shared. “They were only auditioning twins. My mom tells me we went into a room where there were a bunch of toys to play with as well as other kids. [Producer] Bill Asher and others were in there, and they basically just observed us while we played, so there was nothing really formal about what they asked us to do. So, after a few call backs, we were chosen for the part and we started work shortly after.”
Murphy played child with Tabitha for six seasons on Bewitched, from 1966 to 1972.
