Laura Dern is remembering her late mother, Diane Ladd, on the first anniversary of her death, sharing a touching tribute that has prompted an outpouring of love from friends and fans.
The Oscar-winning actress took to Instagram on Nov. 3 to share a black-and-white portrait of Ladd, who died on Nov. 3, 2025, at age 89.
Dern kept her message simple, captioning the photo, “Light of my life.”
The portrait also featured Ladd’s birth and death dates, Nov. 29, 1935, and Nov. 3, 2025.

“Thinking about you and our angel Mama D. Love and light,” Witherspoon wrote.
Actor Jordan Bridges also paid tribute to Ladd, remembering her as a wonderful actress and praising her grace, beauty and humor.
The remembrance comes just one day after Dern shared another emotional Instagram post reflecting on her experience caring for her mother following Ladd’s diagnosis with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a progressive lung disease.
In the Nov. 2 post, shared in partnership with pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim for National Family Caregivers Month, Dern posted a photo of herself smiling alongside her mother.
“When my mother was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF)—the most common form of interstitial lung disease (ILD)—I happily stepped into the role of caregiver,” Dern wrote.
She also reflected on how her mother’s outlook continued to inspire her throughout the experience.
“This #NationalFamilyCaregiversMonth, I’m remembering how my mother impacted me during that time and how she embraced a life beyond the scars of IPF,” Dern shared.
The actress explained that she intends to continue advocating for awareness of the disease in her mother’s honor.
“I made a promise to her that I would continue to raise awareness about IPF, and I will continue to keep that promise,” she wrote.
View this post on InstagramDern and Ladd shared a particularly close relationship, both personally and professionally. The mother-daughter duo appeared together in several films, including Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, the latter earning both actresses Academy Award nominations.
Their relationship also inspired their 2023 book, Honey, Baby, Mine: A Mother and Daughter Talk Life, Death, Love (and Banana Pudding), which grew out of intimate conversations during walks they took together.
Now, one year after Ladd’s death, Dern is continuing to honor her mother’s memory, both through personal tributes and her commitment to raising awareness about the disease that affected her family.
