TMZ was first to report The Godfather star’s death, though no additional information was immediately revealed.
A cause of death is currently unknown.
Duvall was born on Jan. 5, 1931, in San Diego, Calif. He spent a couple of years serving in the U.S. Army before moving to New York in the mid-1950s to pursue an acting career. His first major film role was in 1962’s To Kill a Mockingbird, in which he played Boo Radley.
One decade later, Duvall gave one of the most critically acclaimed performances of his career by playing Tom Hagen in Francis Ford Coppola’sThe Godfather, a role that earned him an Academy Award nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category. Duvall reprised the role two years later for The Godfather: Part II, though he did not join the cast for the film series’s third installment in 1990.
Duvall received multiple nods from the Oscars over the course of his decades-long career in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor categories. His win came in the 1980s, when he won Best Actor for his performance in 1983’s Tender Mercies.
Duvall had numerous other notable acting credits over the course of his career, including in films such as Network, Apocalypse Now and The Great Santini, among many others. His most recent Oscar nomination was for his supporting role in 2014’s The Judge.
